LADY MONARCHS FALL TO MORAVIAN IN ECAC TITLE GAME
READING -- Senior center Kelly Applegate scored
a game-high 24 points to lead the Moravian College women's basketball
team to a 86-64 victory over King's College in the championship game of
the ECAC Southern Region Championships Saturday at Albright College,
Reading.
With the win, Moravian ended its season with an 19-11 record while the
Lady Monarchs conclude their year at 21-9.
Moravian came out of the gates on fire from the field and outscored
King's 46-24 in the first half. Both teams score 40 points each in the
second half as King's was unable to make a dent in the sizeable
Greyhound lead.
Amanda Brown netted 15 points while Jenny Hackleman scored eight points,
with seven rebounds and four assists to earn most valuable player honors
over the course of the three-round tournament.
King's was led by Kaitlyn Fiorino with 15 points and six rebounds.
Lauren Kendra followed with 11 points, three assists, and three steals
while Casey Heitman also tallied 11 points. Andrea Hochstuhl netted 10
points with six rebounds while Sarah Darling contributed four points,
five rebounds, and four blocks. King's leading scorer Jenna
Palumbo was held to just two points in the game, 13 below her season
average.
Despite the loss, the Lady Monarchs concluded an outstanding season
filled with vast improvement over the 2006 squad that finished 13-13.
King's, which reached the Freedom Conference championship game, loses
just one senior - Heitman - to graduation and will return its starting
lineup next year.
