KING'S WOMEN OVERCOME 12-POINT HALFTIME DEFICIT TO
RALLY PAST DESALES
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
basketball team overcame a 12-point halftime deficit as the Lady
Monarchs rallied to post a 62-58 victory over visiting DeSales
University Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, King's forged a second-place tie in the Freedom Conference
with DeSales as both teams stand at 15-6 overall and 7-3 in conference
play.
In the first half, King's was unable to generate virtually any offense
after Lady Monarch junior guard scored the first points of the game.
DeSales would build a 21-8 lead following back-to-back baskets from
LeighAnn Burke and Kim Rarick with 7:06 left in the half.
King's would use a three-pointer from Palumbo, a bucket by Casey Heitman
and a foul shot by Sarah Darling to cut the lead to 25-19 with 3:40
left. But the Bulldogs closed out the half with a 9-3 surge and took a
34-22 lead at the break when Lutz drained a foul line jumper at the
buzzer.
The Lady Monarchs shot a paltry 23.3 (7-of-30) percent in the first half
and were just 4-of-15 from three-point range. Palumbo netted 13 halftime
points to keep King's within striking distance.
King's came flying out of the gates as Andrea Hochstuhl, who was held
scoreless in the first half, tallied seven straight points to cut the
DeSales lead to 36-29 with 15:48 left in the contest.
A three-pointer from Kaitlyn Fiorino, a driving basket from Lauren
Kendra, and another three-pointer from Palumbo cut the lead to 38-7 with
13:29 remaining. After a DeSales miss, Heitman would score to give the
Lady Monarchs a 39-38 lead with 12:35 left.
King's continued to surge when buckets by Fiorino and Heitman and five
points by Hochstuhl gave the Lady Monarchs a 52-41 lead with 7:53
remaining as King's outscored DeSales 30-7 over the first 12:07 of the
second half.
The Bulldogs would finally answer and used a 8-0 run to cut the King's
advantage to 52-49 in a Rarick basket with 4:14 left in the contest.
The Lady Monarchs stretched the lead back to 58-51 when Palumbo
converted a bucket and foul shot with 2:47 on the clock, but DeSales
answered again to close to within 58-56 on a pair of foul shots from
Burke and a three-pointer by Rarick with 1:32 left.
Fiorino would make two foul shots fro King's with 0:33 remaining before
Palumbo was fouled and made one-of-two shots to give King's a 61-56 lead
with 0:26 remaining. Rarick would score with 0:09 left to bring DeSales
to within 61-58 with 0:09 left. Kendra was fouled with 0:06 left and
made the second of two attempts ice the game as the Lady Monarchs took a
62-58 lead.
Palumbo led King's with 22 points while canning four three-pointers to
push her season total to 76. Hochstuhl, finished with 12 points, 10
rebounds, and five blocks despite playing just eight first-half minutes.
Fiorino, who was scoreless in the first half, finished with 10 points
and four rebounds. Laruen Kendra produced an outstanding all-around
game, finishing with nine points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three
steals. Heitman chipped in with eight points.
Lutz led DeSales with 18 points and seven rebounds while Rarick netted
15 points with four assists. Burke finished with 13 points and eight
rebounds while Caitlin Miller chipped in with six points and a game-high
12 rebounds.
King's will host Lycoming College Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon
Gym.
