KING'S WOMEN HOSTING ANNUAL LADY MONARCH CLASSIC
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
basketball team will return to the court for the first time since
December 9 when coach Brian Donoghue's squad faces Arcadia University in
the second game of the annual Candlewood Suites/Lady Monarch Classic beginning Friday in
Scandlon Gymnasium.
Keystone College will face Salisbury University in the 6:00 p.m. opener
on Friday before King's and Arcadia tip off at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday,
the consolation game is slated for 1:00 p.m. with the championship game
to follow at 3:00 p.m.
King's
will be looking to reclaim the Lady Monarch tournament title after
having a four-year championship streak snapped last year. King's had won
its own tournament each year from 2002-through-2005 until Messiah
College ended the run with a 43-36 victory over the Lady Monarchs in the
2006 championship game.
King's enters the tournament with a 5-5 mark and
has been idle since a 54-50 home loss to Cabrini on December 9. The Lady
Monarchs have been paced by junior guard Jenna
Palumbo (above left) who averages 14.4 points and 3.2
rebounds per-game with 32 three-pointers. Sophomore guard-forward
Kaitlyn Fiorino (below right)
follows with 13.8 points and 3.5 rebounds with 17 three-pointers.
Junior center Andrea Hochstuhl (below left)
adds 12.4 points and 10.0 rebounds with 15 blocked shots
while junior guard Lauren Kendra
contributes 5.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 2.9 steals.
Freshman forward Kaitlyn
Malshefski tallies 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds,
sophomore
forward Brittany Atzert has posted
2.9 points and 3.4 boards while sophomore forward
Sarah Darling nets 2.1 points with 3.8 rebounds. Senior
forward Casey Heitman chips in with
2.1 points and 2.8 rebounds. The Lady Monarchs average 58.4 points
per-game, while yielding 60.6 points each contest.
Salisbury University comes into the event as the
tournament favorite, sporting a 7-2 record following a 69-60 loss to
William Paterson on Wednesday. Junior guard Meghan Phillips tops the
squad with 15.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists with 18
three-pointers while senior forward Jessica Mills follows closely with
15.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.1 steals.
Sophomore guard Lindsay Martin adds 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, senior
guard Jenna Peters contributes with 5.3 points, 2.5 steals, 2.1
rebounds, and 2.1 assists, and senior forward Meghan Klug tallies 5.0
points and 4.1 rebounds. Sophomore forward Marissa Manzo averages 4.8
points and 4.8 rebounds, freshman guard Catherine Mills posts 4.6 points
and 2.6 boards while freshman forward Kylie Hall posts 3.8 points and
5.1 rebounds Freshman guard Brianna Simpson chips in with 3.8 points and
2.6 rebounds. Salisbury averages 69.0 points while allowing 62.1 each
contest.
Keystone enters the event with a 2-7 record and
have been idle since a 58-54 win over Marywood on December 16. The Lady
Giants are coached by former King's standout Carissa Ryan, who graduated
from King's in 2003. It will mark Ryan's first game as a head coach in
Scandlon Gymnasium. Junior guard Kerry Fallon leads Keystone with 14.3
points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.7 assists with 19
three-pointers.
Sophomore forward Jessica Kobesky follows with 10.1 points and 7.2
rebounds while junior guard Kerri Brago adds 9.7 points, 4.6 rebounds,
and 3.7 steals with 13 treys. Freshman guard Jeanele Rowmanowski
contributes 7.0 points, freshman forward Yasmeen Bates averages 5.3
points and 7.4 rebounds with 18 blocked shots while sophomore guard
Alyssa Kramer chips in with 3.0 points and 2.6 rebounds. Keystone
averages 56.9 points while yielding 70.2 each contest.
Arcadia stands at 2-6 and has not played since a
70-61 loss to Wilkes on December 16. Senior forward Katie Lynch tops the
squad with 10.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per-game. Freshman guard Kim
Milligan adds 9.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists with eight
three-pointers while junior center-forward Caitlin Sparks adds 8.5
points with 4.1 rebounds.
Freshman guard Rachel Dauscher contributes 7.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and
2.0 assists, freshman guard Ashley Heakins tallies 7.0 points and 3.6
boards while junior guard Stephanie Bates averages 6.5 points, 3.4
rebounds, and 3.1 assists. Freshman guard Kelli Burns has posted 11.3
points and 4.5 rebounds per-game in four games. The Scarlet Knights
average 59.6 points per-game, while allowing 70.6 points each contest.
Following the championship game on Saturday, a six-player all-tournament
team, including a most valuable player will be selected, along with the
presentation of the John Dorish Sportsmanship
Award, named in memory of the long-time King's director of
athletics who passed away September 20, 1999.
