KING'S WOMEN DOWN WIDENER 72-67 IN HOME DEBUT
WILKES-BARRE -- Sophomore center Andrea Hochstuhl scored a
career-high 20 points to lead the King's College women's basketball team
a 72-67 victory over Widener University in first-year head coach Brian
Donoghue's home debut in Scandlon Gymnasium.
King's, which played its first seven games of the season on the road,
improved to 4-4 on the year. Widener, meanwhile, slipped to 7-2.
With King's holding a 12-10 lead, the Lady Monarchs exploded with a 11-0
run, keyed by eight points from freshman guard Kaitlyn Fiorino and three
from Hochstuhl as King's built a 23-10 advantage with 9:33 remaining in
the half. After Widener cut the lead to 29-22 with 4:16 on the clock,
Jenna Palumbo buried a long three-pointer to extend the Lady Monarch
lead to 36-24 with 2:00 remaining. Widener would end the half with a 6-1
spurt, capped by a bucket and two foul shots from Chelsea Lutha as the
Pioneers drew to within 37-30 at the break.
In the second stanza, Widener slowly chipped away and would close to
within 53-50 when Lutha would scored and Celeste Baumgardner made one of
two foul shots with 10:52 left in the contest.
King's would answer with a 8-3 spurt keyed by a basket from Fiorino and
a bucket and foul shot by Brittany Atzert as King's lead grew to 61-52
with 6:52 left. Widener would again battle back and cut the lead to
67-63 on a basket by Kelley Guarrera with 0:53 remaining, but Hochstuhl
came through with a huge three-pointer to give King's a 70-63 lead with
0:40 left.
Hochstuhl would finish the game by hitting 8-of-11 shots while
contributing seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Jordan
followed with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while posting a game-high 10
rebounds. Fiorino added 16 points and six assists while hitting three
shots from behind the arc.
King's, which played the game without starting point-guard Lauren
Kendra, who missed the contest with a minor injury, received a strong
effort from Colette Makoweic who chipped in with four points, five
assists, and two steals.
Lutha enjoyed an outstanding game with a game-high 25 points , nine
rebounds, and four assists. Linette Babiarz added 12 points and six
rebounds while Beth Dessart Mager finished with 11 points.
The Lady Monarchs did an admirable defensive job on Baumgardner,
Widener's 6-2 center, and sophomore forward Dominique Kidd. Baumgardner
entered the game averaging 18.5 points but was limited to nine points.
Kidd averaged 10.1 points but was held to two points by King's.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action December 17 and 18 at the Cruzin'
Classic Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. King's will face Ithaca
College in the opener before meeting NAIA Division II Waldorf University
in its second contest.
