BIG SECOND HALF PROPELS GWYNEDD-MERCY OVER KING'S
GWYNEDD VALLEY -- Host Gwynedd-Mercy College rallied from six points
down with just under nine minutes remaining as the Griffins posted a
73-63 victory over visiting King's College in a non-conference women's
basketball matchup Wednesday in Gwynedd Valley.
With the win, Gwynedd improved to 6-1 on the year. King's, which has
played its first seven games of the season on the road, slipped to 3-4.
The Lady Monarchs built a 34-30 half-time lead and maintained the
advantage throughout the first portion of the second half. The Lady
Monarchs would take its biggest lead of the game at 44-36 with 14:15
left in the contest on a jumper from Bath Jordan and a lay-up by Colette
Makowiec.
After Gwynedd cut the lead to 44-40 on a pair of foul shots by Jackie
Dougherty with 13:37 left, Brittany Atzert countered for King's to up
the advantage to 46-40 with 13:22 remaining. The Griffins cut the lead
to 46-45 when Dougherty made one-of-two foul shots but the Lady Monarchs
again responded with back-to-back baskets from Jordan and Jenna Palumbo
to build the lead back to 50-45 with 10:40 on the clock.
After Andrea Hochstuhl score to give King's a 54-48 lead with 8:57 left,
Gwynedd-Mercy would answer with a decisive 14-0 run to take a 62-54
advantage with 4:40 left. The Lady Monarchs cut the lead to 62-58 on
baskets by Jordan and Kaitlyn Fiorino with 3:46 left, but the Griffins
used a quick 5-0 spurt to increase the lead to 69-58 with 2:30
remaining.
King's cut the lead to 69-63 on a three-pointer from Fiorino with 1:08
on the clock, but the Griffins would seal the game at the foul line by
hitting four straight shots to close out the game.
Jordan led King's with 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists while
Fiorino also totaled 16 points with five boards. Hochstuhl followed with
eight points and five rebounds while Casey Heitman chipped in with six
points. Lauren Kendra netted four points with four rebounds and seven
assists.
Dougherty led the Griffins with 19 points while Jillian Chirantona and
Rebecca Frederick contributed 15 and 12 points respectively.
King's will finally play at home on Saturday when the Lady Monarchs host
6-1 Widener University at 2:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
