KING'S WOMEN DROP OPENER AT MARYMOUNT TOURNEY
ARLINGTON, VA -- The King's College women's basketball team shot just
31.9 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers as the Lady
Monarchs opened the 2005-06 campaign with a 54-49 loss to North Park
(Il.) University Friday in the opening round of the eight-team Marymount
Tip-Off Classic in Arlington, Va.
King's and North Park were deadlocked at 26-26 after the opening 20
minutes, and at 30-30 with 14:05 remaining but the Vikings slowly began
to forge ahead. A bucket by Evie Peterson would cap a 13-6 run by the
Vikings as North Park built a 43-36 lead with 6:15 left. North Park
would then go on a 5-1 spurt to take a 48-37 lead with 4:46 remaining on
back-to-back baskets by Shandrel Young and Peterson.
The Lady Monarchs would battle back and cut the lead to 52-48 on a
basket by Andrea Hochstuhl and consecutive lay-ups from Beth Jordan with
1:27 left. North Park would extend the lead to 53-48 when Laura Mount
made one-of-two foul shots with 0:51 left. But Jordan missed a jumper
with 0:38 left and the Vikings rebounded.
Forced to foul, King's sent Young to the foul line where she made
one-of-two attempts to push the lead to 54-48 with 0:27 left. Jordan
would miss a three-point attempt for King's with 0:10 left and teammate
Lauren Kendra would pick up the offensive rebound and was fouled. Kendra
would make one of two shots with 0:07 remaining as North Park would run
out the clock.
King's made just 15-of-47 shots from the field for the game as Jordan
topped the squad with 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting. Colette Makowiec
followed with eight points while Jenna Palumbo added six. Hochstuhl
contributed four points and a team-high seven rebounds as North Park
held a 34-29 advantage on the boards.
Peterson led North Park with 16 points and seven rebounds while Young
contributed 10 points.
King's will play Wesleyan University, a 2005 NCAA qualifier, Saturday at
11:00 a.m. in the consolation bracket. Wesleyan was upset 64-60 by
Gettysburg in another first-round pairing.
