KING'S WOMEN DROP OPENER AT MARYMOUNT TOURNEY

ARLINGTON, VA -- The King's College women's basketball team shot just 31.9 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers as the Lady Monarchs opened the 2005-06 campaign with a 54-49 loss to North Park (Il.) University Friday in the opening round of the eight-team Marymount Tip-Off Classic in Arlington, Va.

King's and North Park were deadlocked at 26-26 after the opening 20 minutes, and at 30-30 with 14:05 remaining but the Vikings slowly began to forge ahead. A bucket by Evie Peterson would cap a 13-6 run by the Vikings as North Park built a 43-36 lead with 6:15 left. North Park would then go on a 5-1 spurt to take a 48-37 lead with 4:46 remaining on back-to-back baskets by Shandrel Young and Peterson.

The Lady Monarchs would battle back and cut the lead to 52-48 on a basket by Andrea Hochstuhl and consecutive lay-ups from Beth Jordan with 1:27 left. North Park would extend the lead to 53-48 when Laura Mount made one-of-two foul shots with 0:51 left. But Jordan missed a jumper with 0:38 left and the Vikings rebounded.

Forced to foul, King's sent Young to the foul line where she made one-of-two attempts to push the lead to 54-48 with 0:27 left. Jordan would miss a three-point attempt for King's with 0:10 left and teammate Lauren Kendra would pick up the offensive rebound and was fouled. Kendra would make one of two shots with 0:07 remaining as North Park would run out the clock.

King's made just 15-of-47 shots from the field for the game as Jordan topped the squad with 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting. Colette Makowiec followed with eight points while Jenna Palumbo added six. Hochstuhl contributed four points and a team-high seven rebounds as North Park held a 34-29 advantage on the boards.

Peterson led North Park with 16 points and seven rebounds while Young contributed 10 points.

King's will play Wesleyan University, a 2005 NCAA qualifier, Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the consolation bracket. Wesleyan was upset 64-60 by Gettysburg in another first-round pairing.
