KING'S WOMEN POST 18TH STRAIGHT WIN OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE -- Beth Jordan and Andrea Hochstuhl both posted double-doubles to power the King's College women's basketball team to a 78-60 victory over visiting Wilkes University Tuesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in Freedom Conference play. Wilkes slipped to 6-18 and 2-11. King's moved into a third-place tie with Delaware Valley, which dropped an 81-62 decision to DeSales.

The Lady Monarchs also won their 18th straight game at Wilkes dating back nine years to the last Lady Colonel win, a 63-57 verdict on February 11, 1997.

Rena Bolin led an early Wilkes charge with nine points in the opening 8:04 of the contest. She converted back-to-back steals into field goals to provide the Lady Colonels with a 12-8 lead at the 11:56 mark.

King’s would respond with a 10-0 run to assume the lead for good. Brittany Atzert started the spurt with a field goal inside and Jordan knocked down a jumper from the baseline to tie the contest at 12-12. Jenna Palumbo and Casey Heitman followed with consecutive three-pointers to put the Lady Monarchs ahead 18-12 with 9:21 left in the first stanza.

Wilkes would close to within one on a jumper by Randi Corbo and a three-pointer by Lacey Andresen that made it 18-17. But, King’s rattled off the next 13 points to push their lead to 31-17. Jordan had four points during the out burst, while both Palumbo and Kaitlyn Fiorino added a three-pointer apiece. Wilkes would get a 17-foot jumper by Holly Leszyk late in the period to cut the King’s lead to 31-19 at intermission.

The Lady Monarchs would put the game away early in the second half by running off nine straight tallies. Wilkes had closed to within 46-33 on a basket by Corbo at the 15:13 mark. But, Heitman made sure that Wilkes would not get any closer. She knocked down a three-pointer and then hit a charity toss to push the King’s lead to 50-33. A basket inside by Jordan made it 52-33 before Heitman capped the spurt with another three-pointer the extended the advantage to 55-33 with 12:55 left.

Jordan paced four King’s players in double figures with 22 points and 13 rebounds while making 9-of-14 shots from the field. Hochstuhl added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Monarchs, who held a 44-36 rebounding advantage. King’s also got 12 points from Heitman and 10 points, eight assists, and six steals from Lauren Kendra.

Bolin finished with 18 points, four assists and five steals for Wilkes. Kacprowicz chipped in with 11 points for the Lady Colonels.
