MONTCLAIR STATE TOPS KING’S WOMEN, 69-55

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Stephanie Machin scored 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Cynthia Warrington added 16 points as Montclair State posted a 69-55 victory over King’s College in a non-conference women'a basketball matchup Monday at Panzer Gymnasium.

Montclair State (7-5) led 33-30 at the half, but opened the second period with a 20-6 run. Warrington ignited the run with a three-pointer and Machin scored four in a row to boost the lead to 40-30 with 18:21 to play. Four more points by Machin would help extend the lead to 46-32 and Garrabrant scored four consecutive MSU points to make the score 50-34 with 12:20 to play. Ferin Catlet capped off the run with a short jumper at the 11:28 mark.

The Lady Monarchs however would not go quietly as they used a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to trim the lead to five. Sarah Darling and Beth Jordan each had four points in the run while Jenna Palumbo’s long three at 6:54 cut the deficit to 55-50.

But that would be as close a King’s would get as Warrington, who was 8-of-8 from the line in the contest, hit two foul shots and Amanda Mullaney sank a jumper as the Red Hawks restored the lead to 59-50 with 4:43 remaining.
Michelle Madej had eight points and three rebounds for Montclair State, which shot 10-of-19 from field in the second half and made 15-of-20 attempts at the charity stripe in the final period. Catlett grabbed six rebounds as the Red Hawks held a 43-31 advantage on the boards.

Jordan had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Monarchs who fell to 6-7 on the year. Casey Heitman added eight points while Palumbo and Andrea Hochstuhl each contributed six. The Lady Monarchs struggled from the field connecting on just 31 percent (18-of-59) from the field, including six-of-27 attempts from three-point range.

King’s returns home to host Lycoming in a MAC Freedom matchup Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
