KING'S FALLS TO 11TH RANKED MESSIAH, 43-36

WILKES-BARRE -- Amy Reed scored 15 points and the Messiah College women's basketball team over came a 40-minute slow-down attempt by host King's College to capture the Lady Monarch Classic tournament title Saturday at Scandlon Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre.

With the win, 11th ranked Messiah improved to 12-1 on the year while King's slipped to 6-6.

King's came out right from the start and used a deliberate slow-down pace in attempt to throw off Messiah's high-scoring attack.

The strategy worked for much of the first half as King's managed to build a 14-12 lead on a three-pointer by Colette Makoweic and a bucket from Beth Jordan to cap a 5-0 spurt with 3:06 left in the opening stanza.

Messiah, however, countered with a 5-0 surge of its own and took a 17-14 lead into the break on a three-pointer from Reed with 0:06 on the clock.

In the second half King's would continue to dictate the pace and remained close as the teams engaged in four tie scores while trading the lead four other teams over the opening eight minutes of the half.

With the score tied 25-25, Messiah took what proved to be the lead for good when Sarah Ringer made one-of-two foul shots, followed by a bucket from Nicki Loback to give the Falcons a 28-25 lead with 9:43 remaining.

King's would close to within 28-27 on a pair of foul shots from Lauren Kendra, but Messiah answered with a 10-3 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from Lauren Schurr to give the Falcons a 38-30 lead with 3:01 left.

After a Kaitlyn Fiorino three-pointer drew King's to within 38-33 with 1:15 left, Messiah put the game away at the foul line, making 5-of-7 charity tosses over the final minute of action.

Reed's game-high scoring total earned her a spot on the all-tournament team while teammate Eli Cook earned most valuable player honors after netting seven point, four rebounds, two assists, and four steals, while playing outstanding defense throughout. Lobach finished with eight points while Ringer added seven points and three boards.

Fiorino led King's with a game-high 12 points while Jordan was named all-tournament for King's after scoring eight points with six rebounds.

King's Andrea Hochstuhl was presented the John Dorish Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the late King's College director of athletics. Hochstuhl netted four points with four rebounds and a steal. Makoweic chipped in with five points.
