KING'S  WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM DOWNS ONEONTA IN HOLIDAY INN CLASSIC TITLE GAME
(
Yeasted Named Tournament MVP)

ONEONTA, NY --   Senior center Kristin Yeasted scored a game-high 20 points with 11 rebounds and five blocks  to capture most valuable player honors as the King's College women's basketball team posted a 49-40 victory over host Oneonta  State University  in the championship game of the 2004 Holiday Classic in Oneonta, NY

With the win King's, ranked 23rd nationally, improved to 9-0 on the season while Oneonta falls to 7-2 .

The teams played on even terms for the first 7:14 until freshman guard Lauren Kendra scored to ignite a 17-7 run and give King's a lead it would never relinquish.  The Lady Monarchs would take a 23-9 lead on a basket by Katie Lala with  1:45 left in the opening stanza. Oneonta closed out with a 4-0 spurt to close to within 23-13 at the halftime break.

In the second half Oneonta would begin to chip away at the lead with an 11-3 run. Gabrielle Doemel  would eventually hit two free throws  with 15:00 remaining to cut the King's lead to 26-24.  The Lady Monarchs would respond with a 10-3 spurt to go ahead 35-27 with 9:02 remaining. The Red Dragons closed to within 40-37  but the Lady Monarchs ended the game with a 9-3 run to seal the victory

Yeasted  was 6-of-14 from the field but was 8-of-10 from the foul line. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Lady Monarch teammates Beth Jordan and Kendra.  Jordan netted eight points with five assists and three steals while Kendra netted three points with two steals but sparked a Lady Monarch defense which held the Red Dragons to just 25.0 (12-of 48) percent shooting from the field.

Lala added eight points and 10 rebounds while Ashley Whitehead chipped in with six points.  King's dominated the boards with a 46-30 rebounding advantage.

The Lady Monarchs will be idle until January 4 when King's hosts unbeaten and 12th ranked Messiah College at 7:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
