LAS VEGAS, NV -- Jen Wozniak scored a game-high 19
points and added eight rebounds to lead the 19th ranked King's College
women's basketball team to a 75-65 victory over previously unbeaten and
18th ranked St. Benedict College of Minnesota in the championship game of
the Division III Desert Shootout at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
With the win, King's closed out the first semester
with a 7-2 mark while St. Benedict fell to 7-1.
Wozniak paced King's on 9-of-12 shooting to reach
double figures in scoring in all nine games this season. The Lady Monarchs
received its best balanced scoring effort of the season as Tiffini
Varrasse, Kristin Yeasted, and Jennie Orelli all posted season-highs in
points. Varrasse scored 17 points with four assists and two steals;
Yeasted netted 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting; while Orelli added 12 points
with a team-high seven assists. Katie Lala chipped in with eight points,
four rebounds, and two steals while Lauren Bonanni dished out three
assists. The Lady Monarchs shot 45.9 (28-62) percent from the field and
equaled a season-low of 11 turnovers.
St. Benedict, a perennial Division III power which
was 24-3 a year ago, was led by Anna Heikenen with 18 points while Kim
Johnson added 15.
The Lady Monarchs will return to action January 6 at
Susquehanna University in a 7:00 p.m. contest in Selinsgrove.
