VARRASSE, WOZNIAK EACH REACH 1,000TH POINT AS KING'S DOWNS DEL-VALLEY

WILKES-BARRE - King's College senior standouts Tiffini Varrasse and Jen Wozniak both reached the 1,000-point plateau with 15 and 12 points respectively as the Lady Monarchs posted a 89-55 victory over visiting Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference matchup Sunday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Delaware Valley suffered its first defeat of the year in falling to 5-1 and 1-1. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but rescheduled after heavy snowfall resulted in dangerous travel conditions.

In a sloppily played first half by both teams, King's took a 37-33 halftime lead despite foul trouble to Varrasse and Wozniak. Varrasse netted five points in just 10 minutes of play while Wozniak tallied just two points in 12 minutes. Senior forward Jennie Orelli stepped up with nine points in the opening stanza while the Lady Monarch bench all contributed as 11 different King's players scored in the game's first 20 minutes.

King's would begin to assert itself in the second half when Varrasse hit back-to-back buckets to give the Lady Monarchs a 53-44 lead with 13:35 remaining. After The Aggies canned a three-pointer to cut the margin to 53-47, King's went on a 14-2 run keyed by eight points from Beth Jordan to push the score to 67-47 with 7:05 remaining. After an Aggie basket, King's closed out the game with a 22-8 run to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Wozniak, who entered the game needing 12 points to reach the milestone, scored her 1,000th point on a pair of foul shots with 12:44 left in the game and would leave for good shortly thereafter. Varrasse, entered the game 15 points shy of the mark and netted her 1,000th point on a bucket with 5:21 remaining and was promptly removed from the game.

In all, Wozniak played just 19 minutes in the game while Varrasse played 25 minutes. King's outscored Delaware Valley 55-22 in the second half.

Julie McGowan led the Aggies with 23 points while Bridget Golden added 14 points and 11 rebounds.

King's will be idle until December 18 when King's travels to meet Gwynedd-Mercy College.
