GETTYSBURG STUNS KING'S WOMEN 62-61 IN MARYMOUNT
OPENER
ARLINGTON, VA -- Gettysburg College overcame a 33-26
halftime deficit to rally past the King's College women's basketball team
62-61 in the opening round of the Marymount University Tip-Off Classic
Friday on Arlington, Va.
King's, the defending tournament champion and 12th
ranked team nationally in two NCAA Division III pre-season polls, made
just eight of 14 shots in the second half as Gettysburg outscored the Lady
Monarchs 36-28 over the final 20 minutes of the contest.
Jen Wozniak led King's with 25 points and nine
rebounds and made 9-of-12 shots from the field. The rest of the Lady
Monarchs squad would make just 10-of-41 shots (24.3 percent) from the
floor.
King's also hurt itself by making 23-of-35 foul shots and turning
the ball over 21 times compared to 14 for Gettysburg. The Lady Monarchs
also went 0-of-13 from three-point range
Katie Lala was the only other Lady Monarch to score
in double figures with 10 points. All-American guard Tiffini Varrasse
netted just five points for King's.
The Bullets were paced by Dana Bear with 19 points
while Jen Bengel added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Kathryn Reilly also
scored 13 points.
King's will play the loser of St. Lawrence and
Salisbury Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the consolation round of the
three-day, eight-team event.
