KING'S SECOND HALF EXPLOSION WINS TOURNEY TITLE
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's
College women's basketball team overcame a 38-34 with a big second half en
route to winning the annual Lady Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon
Gymnasium.
After Tahnisha Barge scored the first basket of the second half to give
Kean a 41-34 lead, King's responded with a 20-1 run to take a 54-42
advantage with 14:23 remaining on a pair of three-pointers by Jennie
Orelli and five points from Kristen Yeasted.
Kean drew to within 54-46 on consecutive baskets from Jacelyn Stanton, but
the Lady Monarchs countered with a 14-4 run to reestablish command with a
68-50 lead with 9:06 left.
The Cougars would draw to within 11 points, at 70-59, with 4:00 left but
King's closed out the game with a 16-9 spurt to secure the win.
Yeasted scored a career-high 25 points with seven rebounds to secure most
valuable player honors. Yeasted was also solid defensively as she
helped hold Kean's Shervon James to 11 points and six rebounds, after the Cougar
standout scored 29 points with 17 boards in a first round win over
Salisbury.
Orelli was named to the all-tournament team after netting 16 points while
Wozniak won the John J. Dorish Sportsmanship Award after a 16-point,
11-rebounds effort. Vienna Spitler added 14 points for King's while
Tiffini Varrasse contributed nine points, nine assists, and seven
rebounds.
James and Barge, who scored 21 points with five rebounds, were named
all-tournament from Kean while Salisbury's Kiera Watkins and Nellie Mixon
of Neumann were also named to the all-tournament team.
