KING'S SECOND HALF EXPLOSION WINS TOURNEY TITLE

WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's basketball team overcame a 38-34 with a big second half en route to winning the annual Lady Monarch Classic Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

After Tahnisha Barge scored the first basket of the second half to give Kean a 41-34 lead, King's responded with a 20-1 run to take a 54-42 advantage with 14:23 remaining on a pair of three-pointers by Jennie Orelli and five points from Kristen Yeasted.

Kean drew to within 54-46 on consecutive baskets from Jacelyn Stanton, but the Lady Monarchs countered with a 14-4 run to reestablish command with a 68-50 lead with 9:06 left.

The Cougars would draw to within 11 points, at 70-59, with 4:00 left but King's closed out the game with a 16-9 spurt to secure the win.

Yeasted scored a career-high 25 points with seven rebounds to secure most valuable player honors.  Yeasted was also solid defensively as she helped hold Kean's Shervon James to 11 points and six rebounds, after the Cougar standout scored 29 points with 17 boards in a first round win over Salisbury.

Orelli was named to the all-tournament team after netting 16 points while Wozniak won the John J. Dorish Sportsmanship Award after a 16-point, 11-rebounds effort.  Vienna Spitler added 14 points for King's while Tiffini Varrasse contributed nine points, nine assists, and seven rebounds.

James and Barge, who scored 21 points with five rebounds, were named all-tournament from Kean while Salisbury's Kiera Watkins and Nellie Mixon of Neumann were also named to the all-tournament team.
