BOWDOIN VS. SOUTHERN MAINE
WILKES-BARRE -- Kristi Royer scored a game-high 22 points
to power fifth-ranked Bowdoin College to a 64-47 victory over in-state
rival Southern
Maine University at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Sectional Championships in
Scandlon Gymnasium, King's College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
With the win, Bowdoin improved
to 26-2 and advanced to the sectional championship game. Southern
Maine ended its season at 26-4.
Royer scored 11 points each
half and helped Bowdoin pull away after holding a 28-23 half-time
lead. The teams would play on even terms through the first 13:00 of
the second half before Bowdoin began to extend it lead. With the
score 43-35 with 9:00 remaining the Polar Bears went on a 11-2 run keyed
by four points from Royer and Lindsay Bramwell to push the score to 49-35
with 7:18 remaining. After Nikki Allen would score for Southern
Maine, Bowdoin went on a 15-7 run run to take a 64-42 lead on a pair
of foul shots by Lauren Withey 1:40 left to put the game away.
In the first half, Bowdoin took a 7-2 keyed by
four points by Moyer. USM would climb to within 10-9 on two
consecutive field goals followed by a three-pointer by Megan Cressler. USM
would then take a 15-12 lead on a bucket by Kara Crockett with 7:20 left
in the half. With the score tied at 19-19, the Polar Bears took the
lead when Crockett made one-of-two foul shots. Bowdoin would close
out the half with a 8-4 run capped by a pair of baskets by Kristi Royer
and a pair of foul shots by Lora Trenkle to take a 28-23 lead into the
halftime break.
Withey added 11 points while Trenkle netted 11 points with eight
rebounds. Southern Maine was led by Tiffany Jones with 11 points and
four assists. Cressler added nine points and 11 boards.
Bowdin will face the winner of the King's-Eastern Connecticut matchup in
the sectional championship game Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The winner will
advance to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Terre Haute, IN.
