LADY MONARCHS REACH FREEDOM CONFERENCE FINAL WITH
81-53 WIN OVER DELAWARE VALLEY
WILKES-BARRE -- Tiffini Varrasse scored a team-high
16 points with five assists to propel the 11th ranked King's College
women's basketball team to the MAC Freedom Conference championship game
with a 81-53 semi-final triumph over visiting Delaware Valley College
Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
The Lady Monarchs built a 43-25 half-time lead as
Varrasse netted 11 points in the opening stanza. The Lady Monarchs held a
slim 21-17 lead with 7:37 remaining in the half when King's went on a 22-8
run to close out the half. Nikki Kingston started the spurt with a jumper,
followed by a pair of foul shots and a basket by Jen Wozniak. Carissa Ryan
then scored four consecutive points before another Wozniak added another
bucket to put the Lady Monarchs on top 33-20 with 3:08 left.
After Wozniak added a pair of foul shots, Kristin
Yeasted scored off an offensive rebound before Varrasse scored four
straight points to end the half.
King's continued to dominate the second half, and
extended the lead to 73-44 with 5:11 on a bucket by Lisa Krzywicki. The
Lady Monarchs would build their biggest lead at 81-51 with 1:16 left on a
pair of foul shots by Colette Makowiec.
With the win, the Lady Monarchs improved to 22-3
while the Aggies fell to 11-15.
King's will host seventh ranked DeSales for the
Freedom Conference championship Saturday at 7:00 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs
downed Scranton 73-68 in the other semi-final pairing. The winner will
gain an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III national Tournament.
