KING’S WOMEN POST 79-69 WIN OVER WILKES

WILKES-BARRE - The King’s College women’s basketball team overcame an early deficit to post a 79-69 victory over host Wilkes University in an MAC Freedom Conference matchup at the Marts Center.

With the win, King’s improved to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Lady Colonels fell to 11-6 and 3-4.

Wilkes opened the game with an 11-3 spurt keyed by a pair of baskets by Andrea Kacprowicz and three-point play from Whitney Bull. The Lady Monarchs would counter and close to within 16-14 thanks to a pair of baskets by Beth Jordan, a three-pointer by Jennie Orelli and a steal and lay-up by Tiffini Varrasse. Wilkes would answer with a 6-2 spurt capped by a three-pointer by Danielle Kresock as the Lady Colonels would lead 22-16 with 8:36 left in the half.

The Lady Monarchs would then respond with a 16-3 run and took a 32-25 lead with 3:40 left in the half on a steal and basket by Katie Bowes. Wilkes would close to within 34-32 at the half on a late bucket by Andrea DeMaranville and a pair of foul shots by Bull with 0:20 remaining.

The Lady Monarchs would take command in the second half when they opened play with an 11-2 run as Varrasse scored seven points in the spurt to give King’s a 47-34 lead with 16:17 left in the contest. The teams would play on even terms until a Wozniak basket with 12:22 remaining gave King’s 55-39 lead. King’s would secure its biggest lead of the game when Kingston drained a three-pointer with 8:13 remaining.

Kingston led the Lady Monarchs with a game-high 19 points with five steals and four assists. Wozniak netted 18 points with seven rebounds. Varrasse chipped in with 16 points, four assists, and three steals. Beth Jordan chipped in with eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

Wilkes was led by Whitney Bull with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Alicia Woodward followed with 15 points and nine boards.

The Lady Monarchs will next travel to Center Valley to face DeSales University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
