KING'S CROWNS GWYNEDD-MERCY, 86-32
WILKES-BARRE -- The King's College women's
basketball team concluded the first semester of competition with a 7-1
record as the Lady Monarchs routed Gwynedd-Mercy College 86-32 on the
second day of the King's Hoop Challenge Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
King's exploded out of the gates with a 20-2 run
keyed by six points by Tiffini Varrasse, and four each from Nikki Kingston
and Jen Wozniak. The Lady Monarchs continued to expand their lead which
grew to 47-12 at the half. Varrasse and Kingston netted 10 each to pace
King's at the break.
In the second half, King's continued the onslaught
with a 29-6 run to build a 76-18 advantage with 8:15 remaining.
Varrasse paved the way with 15 points, five
rebounds, and three steals to earn tournament most valuable player honors.
Kingston added 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals to earn a spot on
the all-tournament team. Jen Wozniak netted six points with five rebounds
and two assists to also earn a spot on the all-tournament squad. Jennie
Orellie came off the bench to score 14 points for King's, keyed by a
4-of-5 streak from three-point range. Kristin Yeasted added eight points
and six rebounds while Carissa Ryan chipped in with four points, four
rebounds, and two assists.
Lady Monarch Bryan Whitten utilized his entire
17-player roster and none of the Lady Monarchs' five starters saw over 18
minutes of action. A total of 14 different King's players hit the scoring
column in the win.
Gwynedd-Mercy, which fell to 1-6 on the year, was
paced by Kristen Cairns with six points while Ashley Harrison and Gina
Morano added five points each.
The Lady Monarchs will be idle until January 4-6
when it travels to Nassau, Bahamas for the Great Goombay Shootout.
WILKES WOMEN DEFEAT URSINUS 64-49, IMPROVE TO 8-0
WILKES-BARRE-- The Wilkes University women's
basketball team set a establish the best start in school history as the
Lady Colonels defeated Ursinus College 64-49 in the second round of the
King's College Hoop Challenge Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium,
Wilkes, which improved to 8-0, surpassed the
previous best start of 7-0 set in 1992.
Whitney Bull led the way with 26 points and nine
rebounds for the Lady Colonels but saw her streak of consecutive
double-doubles (points-rebounds) come to an end at 16 games. Janae DiPippa
added seven points and six rebounds; Sara Kopko followed with six points
and five boards; while Janna Ward chipped in with six points.
Ursinus (2-5) was led by Bridget Hussey with 29
points and four rebounds. Julia Tramontana added six points. Krista Marino
posted team-high eight rebounds.
Bull and Andrea DeMaranville were both named to the all-tournament team,
along with Hussey.
