KING'S WOMEN ROUTE URSINUS 76-35 IN TOURNEY OPENER, WILKES DOWNS GWYNEDD-MERCY

WILKES-BARRE -- Jen Wozniak scored 15 points and Tiffini Varrasse added 14 points, both in just 20 minutes of play, as the King's College women's basketbakl team posted a 76-35 victory over Ursinus College in the opening round of the King's Hoop Challenge Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

The Lady Monarchs, ranked 11th nationally in Division III, opened up a 42-21 half-time lead as Wozniak and Varrasse netted 12 points each. In the second stanza, the Lady Monarchs would gradually extend its lead as King's coach Bryan Whitten utilized all 17 players in the contest.

Nikki Kingston had an outstanding all-around game for King's with seven points, seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals in 20 minutes of action. Jennie Orelli and Kristin Yeasted netted eight points each as 13 different King's players reached the scoring column. With the victory, the Lady Monarchs improved to 6-1 on the year.

Ursinus was paced by Julia Tramontana with 12 points and six rebounds. Erica Maurer added nine points as the Bears fell to 2-4.

King's will face Gwynedd-Mercy College Thursday at 7:00 p.m. while Ursinus will meet Wilkes at 5:00 p.m.

 

WILKES IMPROVES TO 7-0 WITH 66-58 WIN OVER GWYNEDD-MERCY AT KING'S HOOP CHALLENGE

WILKES-BARRE -- Andrea DeMaranville scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Wilkes University women's basketball team to a 66-58 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy College on the first day of the King's College Hoop Challenge Wednesday ion Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lady Colonels tied the best season start in school history. Wilkes rallied from an eight-point deficit at 49-41 with 9:42 remaining. Rena Bolin ignited the spurt by making one of two fouls shot, then adding a three-point bucket. A lay-up and foul shot by Whitney Bull brought Wilkes to within 52-48 with 4:54 left. Wilkes would recapture the lead at 53-52 on a bucket by DeMaranville with 3:20 left as the Lady Colonels would build their lead to eight points in the final moments.

Bull recorded her 17th consecutive double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Andre Kacprowicz added 10 points.

Gwynedd, which fell to 1-5 on the year was led by Gina Morano with 16 points while Alexis Boyle added 11 points.

Wilkes will face Ursinus College Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the final day of the tournament.
