KING'S WOMEN'S CAGERS HOLD OFF PESKY DREW, 76-73
MADISON, NJ -- Carissa Ryan scored a season-high 18
points and an undermanned King's College women's basketball team held off
pesky Drew University in the MAC Freedom Conference opener for both teams
Tuesday in Madison, NJ.
Fourth-ranked King's, which was playing without
injured all-American guard Nikki Kingston, struggled to a 37-34 half-time lead. With the game tied at 63-63,
King's went on an 8-2 spurt with 3:10 remaining to take a 74-67 lead. Drew
would cut the lead to 74-70 with 0:08 left on a bucket and foul shot, then
added a late three-pointer to narrow the score to 76-73.
Ryan led the way for King's on 6-of-12 shooting
while adding five rebounds and three steals. Jen Wozniak added 15 points
and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Lady Monarchs. Jennie Orelli
contributed 12 points while Katie Lala came off the bench to add 10
points. King's shot just 39.7 (27-68) percent for the game.
The Lady Monarchs, who have held opponents to just
38.2 percent shooting and only 53.5 points per-game, struggled defensively
as Drew shot 50.9 (29-57) and scored more points against the lady Monarchs
than any team this season.
