LADY MONARCHS WRAP UP FIRST-PLACE AND TOP-SEED
WITH 70-56 WIN AT FDU-MADISON
WILKES-BARRE -- Jen Wozniak scored a game-high 17
points while Nikki Kingston
added 15 to power the King's College womenıs basketball team to a
70-56 victory over host FDU-Madison
Saturday in Madison, NJ.
With the win, the Lady Monarchs improved to 23-2
overall and clinched first-place
and the top-seed for the upcoming MAC Freedom Conference playoffs.
King's and Scranton finished with identical 12-2 league records
but the
Lady Monarchs gained the tiebreaker based on its season sweep of the
Lady Royals.
King's established itself early as the Lady Monarchs
raced out to a 19-6 lead
with 13:33 remaining in the opening
stanza as Kingston scored seven of her nine
first-half points in the run. FDU would battle back and come to within
25-22 with 2:39 on the clock, but the
Lady Monarchs would rattle off a 9-2 run
paced by six points from Wozniak and a three-pointer by Jennie Orelli to
take a 33-24 lead into the break.
In the second half, King's went on the offensive
with a 6-0 spurt keyed by a bucket
by Fran Monte and two jumpers by Kingston to up the advantage to
39-24. After an FDU three-pointer,
King's strung together a 13-4 run ignited by
six points from Carissa Ryan to build a 52-31 lead with 12:10 left in the
contest. King's would later enjoy its
largest lead of the game at 59-35 with 8:33
remaining on consecutive buckets by Kingston and Wozniak to put the
game away.
Ryan joined Kingston and Wozniak in double figures
with 10 points while Orelli
and Monte chipped in with eight and seven points respectively.
Kingston added seven rebounds and four
assists while Ryan contributed six caroms.
King's will host Delaware Valley College on
Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the semi-finals
of the MAC Freedom playoffs.
