LADY MONARCHS IMPROVE TO 22-2 WITH 72-50 WIN OVER
WILKES
(King's clinches 2nd straight Mayor's Cup)
WILKES-BARRE -- King's College placed 13 players in
the scoring column as they
topped Wilkes University, 72-50, in a MAC Freedom Conference women's
basketball game on Wednesday night.
The win improves the nationally-ranked Lady Monarchs
to 22-2 overall and 11-2 in
conference play. Wilkes slips to 8-15 overall and 2-11 in the conference.
The victory also keeps King's in a first place tie
in the Freedom Conference with
Scranton.
The victory also enabled King's to clinch a second
straight Times Leader Mayor's
Cup title. The two schools compete head-to-head in 18 contests in 13
sports with the team earning the most
victories winning the cup. With the Lady
Monarch win, King's now holds an insurmountable 10-1 lead with seven
events remaining in the spring.
The Lady Colonels hung tough throughout the first
ten minutes of the opening stanza.
Corinne Stewart hit a pair of free throws at the 10:40 mark to pull
Wilkes to within 16-15. King's, which
had a 22-18 lead with 7:51 left in the half,
went on an 11-0 run to forge in front 33-18. Nikki Kingston canned a
jumper and Jennie Orelli nailed a
three-pointer to push the Lady Monarchs lead
to 27-18. Fran Monte then hit two charity tosses, Katie Bowes scored on
a drive, and April Tanner converted a
field goal inside to end the scoring spurt.
King's would maintain their double-figure advantage
throughout the remainder of
the contest, and headed into the halftime locker room sporting a 38-24
advantage.
The Lady Monarchs then rattled off ten straight
points early in the second half
to take control for good. Leading 47-31, Monte began the spurt with a
jumper. Tanner then hit two free throws
to make it 51-31. Kingston would score
on a drive and Tanner would hit two more charity tosses to push the
lead to 55-31. Bowes would end the run
with driving basket to make it 57-31 with
13:00 left.
Tanner, who had six rebounds, and Kingston each tied
for team-high honors with
ten points for King's.
Wilkes was led by Whitney Bull, who fashioned her
ninth straight double-double
with game-high's of 22 points and 14 rebounds. Caitlin Lee chipped
in with 11 tallies for the Lady Colonels.
Should King's defeat FDU-Madison Saturday in
Madison, NJ, the Lady Monarchs would
clinch first-place and homecourt advantage throughout the MAC Freedom
Playoffs. King's holds the tiebreaker
over Scranton based on their regular season
series sweep of the Lady Royals.
The Lady Monarchs will finish no worst than second
place and will host a first-round
playoff game Wednesday against an opponent to be announced. Game
times will be announced by the MAC
Office on Monday.
