KING'S WOMEN DROP FIRST TO DeSALES, 76-54
WILKES-BARRE Amy Yencho scored a game-high 22 points and the
DeSales University defense forced 36 turnovers as the visiting Bulldogs
handed third-ranked King's College its first loss of the season with a
67-54 victory Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
With the win, DeSales improved to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the MAC Freedom
Conference. King's slipped to 17-7 and 7-1 in league play.
After a slow first half where neither team was able to mount a consistent
offensive, DeSales took a 19-17 lead with 5:59 remaining in the opening
stanza on a pair of foul shots by Yencho to ignite a 13-7 run. After
the teams traded baskets, Yencho then drained a three-pointer and Andrea
Demaranville added a bucket off an offensive rebound to put the Bulldogs
on top 26-19 with 4:25 remaining.
King's countered when Carissa Ryan made one-of-two two foul shots sand
Nikki Kingston converted two charity tosses on the next possession as the
Lady Monarchs closed to within 26-24. But Yencho hit a field goal with
0:10 remaining and, following a Lady Monarch turnover on the inbound pass,
Eric Reed with fouled at the buzzer and converted both ends of a
one-and-one to send DeSales into the locker room with a 30-24 lead at the
break.
In the second half, DeSales would eventually extend its lead to 48-35 on a
bucket and foul shot by Reed with 10:34 remaining. King's would
battle back on a field goals by Ryan and Kingston, a pair of foul shots by
Tiffini Varrasse, to cut the lead to 57-52 with 2:52 left. But DeSales
closed out the game with a 10-2 run keyed by baskets by Yencho and Jen
Netwall , a pair of foul shots by Julie Viercinski, and two more foul
shots by Yencho with 0:21 remaining to seal the win.
The win snapped King's school-record 17-game winning streak and also
halted the Lady Monarchs streak of five consecutive victories over DeSales
dating back to the 2000 NCAA Division III round of 32.
Netwall joined Yencho in double figures with 15 points while adding six
steals. Demaranville had nine rebounds and seven steals.
Kingston and Tiffini Varrasse had 13 points each for King's while
Jen Wozniak added 11. Kingston also had a game-high 10 rebounds.
DeSales' defensive pressure stymied King's offense throughout the contest
as the Bulldogs attempted 65 field goals, compared to 42 for the Lady
Monarchs. Kingšs 38 turnovers were 10 more than its previous season
high.
