KINGS WOMENıS BASKETBALL SURVIVE DREW, 64-59

WILKES-BARRE --     Just hours after moving up to 10th in the Division III national rankings, the King's College women's basketball team played its most lethargic game of season but survived a major upset by Drew University as the Lady Monarchs escaped with a 64-59 victory Tuesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

King's improved to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in MAC Freedom Conference action, while Drew fell to 3-3 and 0-1 in league play.

After the teams went to the locker room tied 29-29 at the half, Drew would assume a 42-39 lead with 13:58 remaining on a three-point play by Ashley Payne.  The Lady Monarchs would respond with a 6-0 run and took a 45-42 lead on three straight baskets by Jen Wozniak.  But the Rangers would knot the score at 47-47 with 10:13 left on a basket by Jennifer Weldon.

King's would go on a 9-3 run, keyed by a bucket by Carissa Ryan, a pair of foul shots by Wozniak, a jumper by Tiffini Varrasse, and three foul shots by Nikki Kingston as King's took a 56-50 lead with 5:44 left.  Drew would come to within 62-59 on a three-pointer by Lauren Aliano with 0:23 left but the Lady Monarchs made 2-of-4 foul shots in the final moments to escape with the victory.

King's, which jumped from 12th to 10th in the d3hoops.com national rankings Tuesday afternoon, shot just 38.3 (23-60) percent from the field and was 0-for-7 from three-point range. The Lady Monarchs also shot a poor 62.1 (18-29) percent from the foul line.  Drew, meanwhile, shot 45.5 (25-55) percent from the field.

The Lady Monarchs were led by Kingston with 13 points, seven rebounds, and seven steals.  April Tanner added 12 points while Wozniak chipped in with 10 points.

King's returns to action Thursday when the Lady Monarchs travel to Chester to face Widener University at 7:00 p.m.  Kingıs will then venture to Center Valley Saturday to face DeSales University on a rematch of the 2001 MAC Freedom championship game won by the Lady Monarchs.
