WOMEN WIN PRESTIGIOUS MARYMOUNT TIP-OFF CLASSIC
ARLINGTON, VA – The King’s College
women’s basketball team battled back from a
10-point second-half deficit to post a 60-56 victory over host Marymount
University in the prestigious eight-team
Marymount Tip-Off Classic in Arlington,
Va.
The Lady Monarchs trailed 54-44 with 8:46
remaining but utilized a tenacious defense
and took advantage of poor foul shooting by the host school to hold
the Saints to just two points the remainder of
the game. Marymount made just 1-of-8
foul shots over the game’s final eight minutes to aid the Lady Monarch
comeback effort.
King’s took a 58-56 lead on a three-point
bucket by tournament most valuable player
Jennie Orelli with 1:42 remaining as the Lady Monarchs improved to 3-0
on the year. Fran Monte added 10 points and
nine rebounds to gain a spot on the
all-tournament team while Nikki Kingston was also outstanding with nine
points and eight rebounds. Tiffini Varrasse
scored points while Jen Wozniak chipped
in with seven points off the bench.
As it did all three games of the
tournament, King’s received outstanding bench
play as the King’s reserves scored 27 of the team’s 60 points. Ten
different Lady Monarch player reached the
scoring column for the second consecutive
night.
Gen Schmitt led Marymount (2-1) with 12
points while Candice Brown added 11.
