KING’S WOMEN FAVORED IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE PRE-SEASON POLL

Annville, Pa. – King’s College has been chosen as the favorite to win the Freedom Conference women’s basketball title in a pre-season coach’s poll. King’s received five-of-seven first place votes and a total of 35 points.

Led by third-year head coach Brian Donoghue (left), the Lady Monarchs finished last season with a record of 21-9 (10-4 Freedom) for second place in the standings. King’s lost to Scranton in the Freedom Conference game.

The Lady Monarchs went on to defeat Villa Julie College in the opening round of the ECAC Southern Regional Championships, then defeated Washington & Jefferson in the semi-finals before losing to Moravian for the championship.

With four starters back, King's looks to build on last years success with the return of two 2007 all-conference picks. The Lady Monarchs will be led by first-team Freedom Conference selection Andrea Hochstuhl (14.3 ppg, 9.9 rpg), a senior center, along with second-team all-conference choice Jenna Palumbo (14.5 ppg., 98 three-pointers), a senior guard. Senior point-guard Lauren Kendra (6.0 ppg, 6.0 apg) and junior guard/forward Kaitlyn Fiorino (13.3 ppg, 63 three-pointers) round out the list of returning starters.

DeSales was second in the poll with 32 total points and two first place votes. After losing to King’s in the conference semifinals, the Bulldogs want to get back to post-season play. In doing that, DeSales will rely on second-team all-conference selection LeighAnn Burke (14.5 ppg, 75 assists) to lead the way.

Delaware Valley placed third in the poll with 25 points. The Aggies (11-13, 7-7) will return six letter winners after placing fifth in the conference last season. Senior second-team all-conference guards Shannon O'Neil (14.0 ppg, 126 assists) and Moira Donohue (14.5 ppg, 95 assists) will be the catalysts behind their postseason push.

FDU-Florham (10-15, 5-7) received 22 points in the poll placing them fourth. Following their sixth-place regular season finish, the Devils are hoping that second-team all-conference player Emily Cerankowski (18.2 ppg) will be able to lead the young squad to post season play.

Wilkes was selected fifth with 12 total points.  The Lady Colonels (6-19, 2-12) will look to rebound from their eighth-place regular season finish and make a run at post season play. Seniors Lacey Anderson (9.3 ppg) and Katie Cappaloni (8.7 ppg) will help guide third year Coach Hartung-Emerthal’s squad.

Manhattanville came in sixth in this year’s poll with 11 points. Last season Manhattanville finished 7-19 in the Skyline conference. Despite the loss of three valued seniors and only six returnees, the Valiants return five of their top six scorers,

Arcadia (9-16) received 10 points for seventh place. Arcadia will look to make the transition from the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference and make an immediate impact on the Freedom Conference.  With nine sophomores and freshman on the roster, the Knights will look to develop into a surprise team this season.
