KING'S WOMEN SET TO HOST ANNUAL LADY MONARCH CLASSIC

LIVE Basketball Stats & Play-by-Play - Click Here

WILKES-BARRE -- For the past month, the King's College women's basketball team has struggled mightily with a team hit hard by injuries. With three key inside player missing a combined 15 games and limiting the Lady Monarchs to just one healthy post player, the team struggled to a 5-6 record, including four straight losses to close out the first semester.

When King's hosts the annual Lady Monarch Classic beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m., coach Brian Donoghue could very well have senior pre-season all-American 6-0 center Andrea Hochstuhl, 5-10 sophomore power forward Krystina Durako, and 6-0 freshman center-forward Sarah O'Doherty back, if for only limited minutes of action. The trio of post players, who were cleared to begin practicing on Tuesday, may only see limited time at the tournament, but with the Freedom Conference schedule set to begin Tuesday, their return could not come at a better time.

The event will tip off Friday at 6:00 p.m. when Salisbury University of Maryland faces Norwich University from Vermont in the opening contest. King's will face Neumann College in the 8:00 p.m. nightcap. The consolation game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with the title game slated for 3:00 p.m.

King's last competed December 20-21 when the lady Monarchs dropped a pair of games to defending Division III national champion DePauw University and 2007 NCAA qualifier LaVerne University at the Caribbean Showdown in Cancun, Mexico December 20-21. Junior guard-forward Kaitlyn Fiorino tops the squad with 16.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 27 three-pointers. Senior guard Jenna Palumbo follows with 13.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 36 three-pointers. Hochstuhl, who returns from knee and hand injuries that limited her effectiveness during the first four games, averaged 8.8 points with 7.8 boards before undergoing surgery to fix her broken left hand. Sophomore guard-forward Jessica Paettie adds 8.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 19 three-pointers.

Sophomore power forward Krystina Durako, who missed the past four games with a knee injury, posted 8.3 points and 6.6 rebounds prior to being sidelined. Senior point-guard Lauren Kendra tallies 5.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 2.5 steals per-game. Sophomore forward Kaitlyn Malshefski contributes 4.5 points and 4.0 rebounds. Freshman center-forward Sarah O'Doherty, who missed the past four games with a separated shoulder, averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 boards while starting the first four games of the season. Freshman shooting guard Kristen Baumes registers 2.5 points while junior point-guard Andrea Carroll chips in with 2.0 points per-game. The Lady Monarchs average 64.8 points per-game, while yielding 66.5 points each contest.

Neumann enters the Lady Monarch Classic with a 4-5 overall record following a 79-63 win over Catholic December 29. Neumann defeated King's 64-51 a year ago in the team's most recent meeting in Aston. The Knights are led by sophomore guard Brittany Whetts with 13.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per-game. Freshman guard Krista DiRomualdo follows with 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists with 10 three-pointers. Sophomore guard Caitlin Agnew adds 7.9 points and 3.7 rebounds while junior guard Ashley Pearsall nets 5.8 points with 17 assists. Sophomore guard Coleen Healy tallies 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds while sophomore guard Stephanie Fanto posts 4.3 points with 2.2 rebounds. Sophomore center Dorothy Dozier contributes 4.2 points and 5.9 boards while freshman forward Katie Young chips in with 3.2 points and 4.0 boards. Neumann averages 59.2 points while yielding 63.7 each contest.

Salisbury, which makes its fifth straight appearance in the tournament, enters the event with a 3-6 record after a 66-62 win over York College in its last game on December 8. The Sea Gulls are led by junior guard Monica Merkel who averages 14.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per-game. Junior guard Lindsay Martin follows with 9.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 2.4 assists with seven three-pointers. Sophomore forward Janay Johnson adds 8.3 points and 5.7 rebounds while senior guard Meghan Phillips tallies 6.8 points and 2.8 assists with a team-high eight three-pointers.
