MICHAEL, SABO NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE DISTRICT II ALL-ACADEMIC
TEAM
WILLIAMSPORT – King's College athletic standouts Megan Michael (Forty
Fort/Wyoming Valley West) and Lindsay Sabo (Milford/Delaware
Valley) have been selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District II College Division Women’s At-Large, as selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A senior tennis player, Michael was one of 10 student-athletes who were
first-team All-District II selections and will now be placed on the
national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s
At-Large Team, scheduled to be announced June 16. Sabo was a second-team
selection as a sophomore field hockey and lacrosse player.
The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II, NCAA
Division III, and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the
District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West
Virginia. To be nominated for the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-America‚ program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore
with a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant
reserve on her team.
Michael, who played number-one singles and doubles four straight years
on King's women's tennis team, graduated last week with a perfect 4.0
grade-point average and was co-class valedictorian at King's. Michael,
who was named to Dean’s List every semester, was president of the Sigma
Tau Delta English Honor Society and was a member of the college's
Aquinas Honor Society, Pre-Law Society, and Circle K Club. She was
selected to King's Phi Sigma Tau Philosophy Honor Society as well as the
Delta Epsilon Sigma Catholic Honor Society. Michael was also named to
the National Dean’s List, an honor bestowed on less than one-percent of
students in the United States.
Michael was also active in the community, serving as a volunteer worker
at Little Flower Clothes Closet, March of Dimes, Osterhout Free Library,
and Wilkes-Barre Special Olympics. She worked as an Effective Writing
teacher in King’s Writing Center while also serving as a Peer Tutor. She
was also a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference All-Academic selection.
In tennis, Michael finished second all-time in singles wins at King’s
with 43-23 record and was a three-time MAC All-Star selection. She will
attend The Pennsylvania State University Law School in the fall.
Sabo, meanwhile, was selected as a dual sport athlete, having enjoyed
outstanding seasons in both field hockey and lacrosse. Academically,
Sabo has been named to King's Dean’s List all four semesters and posted
a 3.96 grade-point average. She was selected to the Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society and is a member of King's Education Club. She works at King's as
a Peer Tutor in Calculus while also having served as a resident
assistant. Sabo also served as a volunteer for Big Brothers/Big Sisters
while also volunteered to provide clothing for the needy with the
Wilkes-Barre Commission on Economic Opportunities. Additionally, she
participated in the Relay For Life.
Athletically, Sabo lead both the field hockey and lacrosse teams in
scoring during the 2004-05 campaign and earned MAC all-conference honors
in both sports. In field hockey, Sabo set school records in 2004 with
goals (5) and points (12) in one game. She finished third in conference
scoring in field hockey with 31 points on 10 goals and 11 assists. In
the 2005 lacrosse campaign, Sabo posted a school-record 97 points on 44
goals and another school-record of 53 assists. She also set another
King's record with 10 points in one game while leading the Lady Monarchs
to their first-ever MAC playoff berth and a school-record 11-6 mark.
Sabo was named conference “Player of the Week” in both field hockey and
lacrosse during the 2004-05 year.
"Both Megan and Lindsay are very deserving of this honor as they
represent the best King's has to offer in academics and athletics," said
King's sports information director Bob Ziadie, who nominated both
students-athletes. "What they have accomplished in the classroom, their
respective sports, and in their other extracurricular activities,
reflects how dedicated and responsible they both are in whatever they
do. They are two outstanding individuals and the King's community is
proud that they have been recognized in such an outstanding way."
