EIGHT KING'S STUDENT-ATHLETES RECEIVE MAC
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS
ANNVILLE -- A total of eight King's College
student-athletes have been named to the first annual Middle Atlantic
Conferences Sportsmanship Team for the fall sports season, the MAC
Office announced Friday.
The award was instituted to recognize student-athletes from all MAC
sponsored sports who have demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship through
their actions on and off the field during the season. Those chosen for
the award are selected by players and/or coaches from their respective
teams.
Players for King's who were selected include senior Tore Alaimo
(Pittston Twp./Pittston Area), football; senior Ave' Moran
(Florence, NJ/Holy Cross), field hockey; junior Ryan Symons
(Wilkes-Barre/Coughlin), men's soccer; sophomore Erin Tanner
(Dallas/Dallas), women's soccer; junior Nadya Alboschy (Salisbury
Mills, NY/Washingtonville), women's volleyball; senior Sarah Guza
(Hazleton/Hazleton Area), women's tennis; senior Ed Kopec (Forty
Fort/Wyoming Valley West), men's cross country; and junior Kelley
Weidwald (Kingston/Wyoming Valley West), women's cross country.
Alaimo
recently concluded an outstanding career for the Monarch football team
where he earned a third straight first-team MAC all-star selection. He
also set school-records in single-season total tackles (127),
single-season assists (73), career total tackles (354, and career
assists (167). He also equaled the school single-game tackle mark with
21 against Delaware Valley College while standing second all-time at
King's with 190 solo tackles.
Moran
also wrapped up a fine career on King's field hockey team where she
helped the Lady Monarchs to back-to-back MAC Freedom Conference
championships. On the year, she was fourth on the team in scoring with
nine points on three goals and three assists. During her career she
proved to be a versatile performer, playing a variety of offensive,
defensive and midfield positions where she totaled 21 points on seven
goals and seven assists.
Symons
was a key player for the Monarch soccer team which finished second in
the MAC Freedom Conference Tournament. A top defender, Symons was a
second-team All-Freedom pick and netted one goal during the year.
Tanner
played in 18 games for the women's soccer team, starting 11 contests
during the year. She finished with five points on two goals and one
assists. Tanner was also a 2007 MAC All-Academic selection.
Alboschy
helped King's volleyball team to a 21-13 record and a spot in the
semi-final round of the Freedom Conference Tournament. She tallied 87
digs playing primarily in the back row while chipping in with two kills,
six service aces, and five assists in 60 games. Alboschy is a two-time
MAC All-Academic selection.
Guza
was a second-team MAC All-Freedom tennis selection as King's
number-two singles player. She went 11-6 in singles while posting a 16-3
doubles mark where she teamed with Kristen Hunter to finish second in
the MAC Doubles Championships. She is a three-time MAC All-Academic
choice.
Kopec
wrapped up a highly-successful career for the King's men's cross country
squad with a sixth-place finish in the 2007 MAC Cross Country
Championships and was a three-time all-conference selection. After a
fourth-place MAC finish as a sophomore, Kopec battled pneumonia as a
junior and managed to place 14th in the MAC championship meet. He is a
three-time MAC All-Academic selection.
Weidwald
concluded a fine junior year where she placed 17th in the MAC
Championships to earn second-team honors. After finishing 19th as a
freshman, she was 25th during injury-filled sophomore year.
