THREE KING'S PLAYERS NAMED MAC FALL SPORTS SCHOLAR-ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

ANNVILLE -- Three members of King's College fall sports teams have been honored as the top student-athletes in their respective sports by the Middle Atlantic Conferences.

Each year the MAC selects one individual from every sport during the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons as the best student-athlete in that particular sport. King's senior Melissa Gates (Jenkintown/Jenkintown) has been named as the MAC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year; senior Ed Kopec (Forty Fort/Wyoming Valley West) was selected as the MAC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year; while senior Kristen Hunter (Lebanon/Annville-Cleona) has been chosen as the MAC Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Gates compiled a 3.91 GPA as a business administration major. She was a three-time MAC All-Academic selection in field hockey and a two-time MAC All-Academic choice in women's lacrosse. She was named to MAC Freedom Conference first-team in 2007 and was a second-team pick in both 2005 and 2006. She helped King's win back-to-back Freedom Conference titles and a pair of NCAA Division III National Tournament berths in 2006 and 2007.

Kopec posted a 3.836 GPA as an elementary education major. He was a three-time MAC All-Academic selection in cross country. He was named to MAC All-Conference first-team in 2005 and 2007 while earning second-team MAC honors in 2006. Kopec placed 6th in the 2007 MAC Championships, 14th in 2006 MAC Championships, and 4th in 2005 MAC Championships. He also placed 28th in 2007 NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships.

Hunter, meanwhile, registered a 3.82 GPA as an accounting major and was a three-time MAC All-Academic selection. Playing the number-one singles and doubles positions for King's the past three seasons, Hunter finished second in 2007 MAC Doubles Championships in #1 flight. She was a first-team All-Freedom Conference selection in 2007 while receiving second-team All-Freedom honors in 2006. She led King's to a school-record 12-4 team mark and a berth in the Freedom Conference playoffs
