KING’S DOWNS ELIZABETHTOWN, 28-14

WILKES-BARRE The King’s College wrestling team overcame an 11-7 deficit by winning four of the last five matches as the Monarchs posted a 28-14 victory over visiting Elizabethtown College Friday in Scandlon Gymnasium,

With the win, King’s improved to 8-9 on the year with its sixth straight dual meet triumph. Elizabethton, meanwhile, fell to 4-5.

With King’s trailing 11-7 entering the 165-pound bout, Monarch senior Drew Dehaut, wrestling his final match in Scandlon Gymnasium, gave King’s a 13-11 lead with a quick pin of Paul Connor in 1:50. The Monarchs would add to its lead at 174-pounds when Zack Dietrick took a 2-0 first period lead with a takedown of Brett Epps. Dietrich would ride out Epps for the entire second period and earned a riding time point as the Monarch senior won his final home match with a 3-0 victory as the King’s team lead grew to 16-11.

At 184-pounds, King’s sophomore Zach Wilkinson took a 2-1 lead after a takedown of Robert Mount. Wilkinson would post an escape and takedown for a 5-1 lead before finally pinning Mount at 3:42 to give the Monarchs a 22-11 lead.

In the 197-pound match-up King’s sealed the match when senior standout Jason Reilly made the most of his final home match by pinning Deron Sharp in 1:13 to seal the match for the Monarchs as the King’s lead grew to 28-11. The win was the 101st of Reilly’s stellar career.

In the first match at 125-pounds Pete Achilles of Elizabethtown took a 2-0 lead over King’s Jeff Mazurek with a late first-period takedown. After Achilles chose the neutral position to start the second period, the Blue Jay junior added another takedown for a 4-0 advantage entering the final frame. Achilles would added an escape and takedown for a 7-0 lead. Mazurek would escape to cut the lead to 7-1 but a riding time point gave Achilles a 8-1 decision.

In the 133-pound bout, King’s all-American David Morgan used three takedowns to build a 6-3 first period advantage over Terry Bartholomew. An escape by Bartholomew was followed by a fourth takedown by Morgan for a 8-4 lead. Bartholomew would escape to cut the lead to 8-5 heading into the third period. A Morgan escape and two more takedowns upped the lead to 13-7. Morgan would added a takedown with 0:05 left and riding time point for a 16-7 major decision as King’s took a 4-3 lead in the team scoring.

At 141, King’s Anthony Meile would score any early takedown of Andrew Winegar but surrendered an reversal and back points to fall behind 4-2. Miele, however, would register a reversal to knot the score at 4-4 entering the second period. Winegar would score a reversal before Miele followed with an escape to cut the lead to 6-5. Miele would answer with a takedown for a 7-6 lead but Winegar escaped with 0:08 on the clock to forege a 7-7 tie after two periods. Miele would escape to start the third, but Winegar posted a takedown for a 9-8 advantage. Miele escaped to tie the score at 9-9 , then added a riding time point for a 10-9 decision and a 7-3 Monarch lead.

At 149, Elizabethtown’s Richard Crosswell used two takedowns, an escape and 13 near fall points for an 18-3 technical fall in 2:58 as the Blue Jays took a 8-7 lead.

In the 157-pound matchup King’s Taylor Green and Elizabethtown’s Jereme Heisey battled to a 0-0 tie after one period. Heisey would use a second period reversal for a 2-0 lead Green would escape to cut the lead to 2-1 entering the third period. After Green escaped to tie the score at 2-2, Heisey followed with a takedown with 0:56 left and a 4-2 advantage. Green would escape to cut the lead to 4-3, but Heisey would hold on to earn the decision and give the Blue Jays a 11-7 lead, setting up the Monarch comeback.

In the final match at heavyweight King’s Jim Bishop and Elizabethtown’s Michel Daub entered the second period deadlocked at 0-0. Bishop would score the first points with an escape to take a 1-0 lead into the final period. Daub would escape to tie the match at 1-1 but neither wrestler would score the rest of the way as the match entered overtime. After a scoreless extra period on their feet, Daub would ride out Bishop in the second overtime period. In the third frame, Daub would escape to secure a 2-1 decision to cut the final team score to 28-14
