KING’S WRESTLERS UPSET 24TH RANKED LYCOMING, 25-15

WILKES-BARRE -- Drew Dehaut and Zach Wilkinson posted a pair of important pins to lead the King’s College wrestling team to a 25-15 upset over 24th ranked Lycoming College Friday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

King’s, which was wrestling with a full lineup for the first time since December 2, earned its first victory over Lycoming since a 24-9 triumph December 8, 2001.

In the first match at 125-pounds, King’s Jeff Mazurek took a 2-0 lead with a first period takedown over Joe Palmitessa. After an escape, Mazurek added a second takedown for a 4-1 lead entering the second stanza. Palmitessa would escape to cut the lead to 4-2 heading into the last period. Mazurek added a takedown midway through the thrid period, then added three nearfall points and a riding time point for a 10-2 major decision.

The feature match of the even came at 133-pounds between King’s all-American David Morgan, a sixth-place finisher in the 2006 NCAA Division III national tournament, and two-time national qualifier Sean Cullen of Lycoming. After a scoreless first period, Morgan would register an early second period escape to take a 1-0 lead. Morgan added a takedown for a 3-1 lead but Cullen would escape to cut the lead to 3-1 entering the final frame. A Cullen escape cut the margin to 3-2. Neither wrestler would score the rest of the way as Morgan would hold on for a one-point victory, giving the Monarchs a 7-0 lead.

At 141-pounds, Lycoming’s Kyle Hopkins took down Anthony Miele for a 2-0 lead, then added a second period escape for a 3-0 advantage. Hopkins would then post a takedown for a 5-0 advantage heading into the third period. Miele would choose the top position and rode Hopkins out for the final frame but dropped a 5-0 decision.

In the 149-pound bout, King’s Frankie Davis took a 2-1 first period lead with a takedown of Drew Barder. Barder, however, would escape and took down Davis at the buzzer for a 3-2 advantage heading into the second period. Davis would escape to knot the score at 3-3, but Barder scored another takedown for a 5-3 lead. Davis later added an escape to close to within 5-4 heading into the third period. Barder would escape and followed up with his third takedown for an 8-4 advantage. An additional riding time point would give Barder a 9-4 decision and cut the King’s lead to 7-6.

At 157, King’s Taylor Green used a takedown and two nearfall points for a 4-0 first period lead over Chris Dahlheimer. In the second period Green scored a takedown from the neutral position to build a 6-0 lead before Dahlheimer would escape to closed to within 6-1 entering the final period. Dahlheimer would post a neutral position takedown to cut the lead to 6-3 but would draw no closer as Green held on for the victory while giving King’s a 10-6 lead.

Drew Dehaut would then come up a crucial victory at 165-pounds when he pinned Eric Miller in 1:05 to give the Monarchs a 16-6 lead.

At 174, King’s Zach Dietrick would take a 2-0 lead over Clinton Gardner with a takedown midway through the first period. Gardner, however, would score a second period reversal before pinning Dietrick in 3:49, cutting the King’s lead to 16-12.

In the 184-pound matchup, Lycoming’s Brian Kopesky scored an early takedown of Zach Wilkinson for a 2-0 lead. Wilkinson would escape and used a late takedown to take a 3-2 lead entering the second period. Wilkinson added another escape for a 4-2 advantage going into the final frame. Kopesky would escape, but Wilkinson posted a takedown before registering a pin with 0:56 left to give King’s a 22-12 lead.

At 197-pounds, Lycoming’s Matt Miller took a 2-0 lead with a takedown of King’s Jason Reilly, Reilly would score a reversal to knot the score at 2-2 after one period. Miller would pick up a pair of points on two stalling penalties to take a 4-2 advantage. An escape would give Miller a 5-2 lead heading into the third stanza. Reilly would pick up one stalling point and another for riding time as Miller held on for a 5-4 decision. The Warriors, however, need at least a major decision as King’s would hold a 22-15 lead heading into the final bout.

In the 285-pound match, King’s Jim Bishop took a 1-0 lead over Joe Ostrowski after a second period escape. Ostrowski would then use a third-period escape to tie the score at 1-1.
