ARNONE WINS 100TH CAREER MATCH BUT ROYALS POST 24-14 WIN OVER KING’S, THEIR FIRST OVER THE MONARCHS SINCE THE 1986-87 SEASON

SCRANTON, Pa.—It was a memorable night for the University of Scranton wrestling team and for King’s College senior Joe Arnone Wednesday evening at the John J. Long, S.J., Center.

The Royals won seven of 10 weight classes to post a 24-14 victory, its first over an injury-plagued Monarch squad since a 24-19 victory during the 1986-1987 season. Arnone reached a personal milestone with his 100th career victory, an 8-0 major decision over Tom Phillips at 165.

Arnone, the 2004 MAC champion and returning all-American, scored two points with

take-downs in each of the first two periods before scoring a one-point escape to open the third period. He earned two more points with another take-down and another point for riding time to improve to 17-4 this year and 100-34 in his career.

Freshman Rich Russell of Scranton opened the match by posting a 3-2 decision over Ryan Richard. He improved to 15-9 on the season. King’s sophomore John Houssock posted a 13-1 major decision over Ryan McDaniel to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead before the Royals’ Joe

Leva, Donell Young, and Nick Barber posted victories at 141, 149 and 157, respectively, to give Scranton a 15-4 lead.

Leva and Young posted 6-2 and 9-6 decisions over Scott Prutzman and Chris Sullivan, respectively, while Barber pinned Drew Dehaut at the 5:34 mark of the third period.

Scranton’s other wins were recorded by freshman Stephen Tatum, junior Trevor Needham, and senior Mike Kelly at 174, 184 and 197, respectively. Monarch sophomore Jim Bishop won the final match of the evening by pinning Vince Realmuto at the 5:34 mark of the third period at 285-pounds

Scranton is now 4-3 on the season while the Monarchs fell to 4-8.
