WILKES WRESTLERS DEFEAT KING’S 20-15

WILKES-BARRE -- Wilkes University overcame an early 12-3 deficit by winning five of the lat six bouts as the Colonels earned a 20-15 victory over host King’s College Tuesday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, Wilkes evened the all-time series with King’s at 3-3 and kept the unusual streak of the visiting team winning every match intact.

In the first bout at 141-pounds Wilkes Pat O’Hara broke a scoreless match open with a second period escape to take a 1-0 lead over Tim Martinez. O’Hara added a takedown and three back points, followed by a stalling point against Martinez to take a 7-0 victory.

At 149, King’s Jim Moran scored a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall to take a 7-1 fist period lead over Keith Jones. Morgan added two more takedown and tree nearfall points to build a 14-2 lead at the end of two periods Morgan added a third period takedown and nearfall to gain a 20-3 technical fall victory and put the Monarchs ahead 5-3.

In the 157-pound bout King’s Dave Shafer took a 2-0 over Erik Hansen lead on a quick pair of stalling points. Shafer added a takedown and two back points to take a 6-0 lead into the second period. Shafer added a takedown and picked up two more points on the fourth stalling call of the match to build a 12-2 lead heading into the third period. Shafer would add an escape and takedown and a riding time point to post a16-4 major decision and up the Monarch lead to 9-3.

At 165, Wilkes’ Sean Davies took a 2-0 lead with a second period takedown over King’s Joe Arnone. After an Arnone escape, the Monarch sophomore posted a takedown to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. Arnone added an escape to go ahead 4-2 and picked up another point on a stalling call to build a 5-2 advantage. Arnone then followed up with a takedown and riding time point to capture a 8-2 decision as King’s lead grew to 12-3.

In the 174-pound class Wilkes’ Rex Harris posed a takedown to take a 2- 1 lead into the second period over Joe Parsons. Harris would the be penalized for locked hand as Parsons gained a penalty point to tie the match at 2-2. Harris would then turn over Parsons for three nearfall point and entered the final frame with a 5-2 lead. Harris added a third period reversal, two back points, and a ridng time point to gain a 10-2 major decisio to bring wilke t wthin12-7.

At 184, Wilkes freshman Brandon Kelly posted a first period takedown then added a pair of back points to take a 4-0 lead iino the second period. Kelly added an escape and takedown to extend the lead to 7-0. Kelly escaped in the third period then scored a takedown to extend the lead to10-0. Kelly would let Vodofsky escape and post a late takedown to earn a 13-1 major decsion and cut the King’s lead to 12-11.

In the 197-pound bout, Wilkes’ Jon Nyerlin scored a takedown to build a early 2-1 first period lead over Matt Gingo. Neyerlin would add a second period escape before Gingo escaped in the third period to cut the lead to 3-2. Neyrlin would hold off Gingo over the final minute to earn the decision and put Wilkes ahead 14-12.

At 285, Wilkes Cory Fleisher scored a takedown to build a 2-0 lead over Tegan McKee. After McKee escaped, Fleisher posted another takedown to enter the second period with a 4-1 lead. Fleisher would escape to carry a 5-1 lead into the third frame. After McKee escaped to cut the lead to 5-2 and gaind late takedown but Fleisher added a riding time point to secure a 6-4 victory and extend the Wilkes lead to 17-12.

In the 125-pound bout, King’s Mitch Marcks posted a late takedown of Brandon Romanoski to enter the second period with a 2-0 lead. Marcks would earn a second period escape to carry a 3-0 advantage into the third period. Romanoski would cut the lead to 3-1 with an escape but Marcks would counter with a takedown to extend the lead to 5-1. A late Romanoski escape cut the final score to 5-2 and bring King’s to within 17-15 heading into the final bout.

At 133, Wilkes John Muscarella took a 1-0 lead over Jeremy Ackerman with a late second period escape. Ackerman would escape in the thirrd period to tie the ut t 1-1. Muscarella would then post a takedown with 0:14 left to gain a 3-2 decision and close out the match for the Colonels.
