KING'S ADVANCES NINE TO SATURDAYıS MAC SEMI-FINALS

GRANTHAM -- The King's College wrestling team made a strong push in the opening day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships as the Monarchs advanced nine of their 10 wrestlers to the semi-finals at Messiah College.

Wilkes holds an early first day lead with 19 points after the first round while Delaware Valley and Lycoming each have 17 while the Monarchs stand fourth with 11. But Kingıs And Lycoming both have nine semi-finalists while Wilkes has eight and Delaware Valley has seven.

The semi-finals will begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the finals expected to held at 2:30 p.m.

At 125, King's top-seeded Mitch Marcks advanced to the semi-finals with a pin in 1:07 over Dustin Simcoe of Albright. Marcks will face Mike Boyle of Elizabethtown.

At 133, King's fifth-seeded Mike Griffith, the defending MAC champion, upset fourth-seeded Ben Ewig of Messiah 13-8 in a rematch of the 2001 MAC finals won by Griffith. The Monarch sophomore advanced to the semi-finals where he will meet top-seeded Mike Waldron (28-1) of Lycoming.

King's fourth-seeded Tim Martinez would then face Scrantonıs Tim Simansly in the 141-pound quarterfinals where the Monarch rookie would drop an 8-0 major decision. Martinez will enter the consolations where he will attempt to wrestle back for third place.

At 149, second-seeded Jim Morgan received a first-round bye and advanced to the semi-finals where he is slated to meet third-seeded Corey Mowrey of Lycoming.

At 157, top seeded Monarch Dave Shafer also received a bye and will face fifth seeded Nick Myles of Elizabethtown in the semi-finals.

At 165, top-seeded Jesse Martinez pinned Alex Miner of Messiah in 2:05 and will next face fourth seeded Derek Crane of Lycoming. Crane earned a decision over Martinez in the regular season. Monarch second-seeded freshman Joe Arnone advanced to the semi-finals when he pinned Todd Alsher of Albright in 2:12. Arnone will next face third-seeded Josh Housekeeper of Delaware Valley.

At 184, King's second-seeded Jason Schlingman received a bye and will face third-seeded Jeff Tierney of Lycoming.

At 197, Monarch fifth-seeded rookie Tegan McKee advanced to the semi-finals with a 8-3 decision over fourth-seeded Mike Miller, avenging a loss to Miller last week. McKee will face top-seeded Andrew Helm of Wilkes in the semi-finals. Helm pinned Elizabethtown's Wade Clevenger in 1:03.

At heavyweight, King's Jared Potsko received a bye and moved into the semi-finals where he will meet Wilkes Corey Fleisher, himself a 16-2 winner over Lycomingıs Al Fluman.

The 10 individual champions and two wild cards will gain berths to the NCAA Division III National Championships to be hosted by Kingıs and Scranton March 1-2 at First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.
