KING'S WRESTLERS SWEEP TRI-MEET TO CONCLUDE
DUAL MEET SEASON AT 24-2
WESTMINSTER, MD -- The King's College wrestling team
put a cap on its most
successful
dual meet season ever when the Monarchs swept a triangular meet
Saturday at Western Maryland College.
King's, ranked fourth nationally in Division III,
defeated Middle Atlantic
Conference
rival Messiah College 31-10, before rallying to upend 15th ranked
defending Centennial Conference champion
Western Maryland 25-19 to conclude the
dual meet season with a school-record 24-2 mark.
Against Messiah, King's won seven of the 10 bouts
and were paced by Dave
Shafer
and Tim Martinez who each posted technical fall victories. Shafer
won by
a 19-4 count over Dave Bundus while Martinez defeated Geoff Harner 16-0.
In the feature match of the dual meet at 149, 2001
MAC champion and NCAA
Division
III national runner-up Andy Vogel posted a 6-0 decision over Kingšs
Jim Morgan, who was the 2001 MAC
champion at 141 pounds.
Jason Schlingman earned a 5-3 decision over Dan
Stone at 184; Jesse Martinez
earned
a 5-0 decision over Alex Miner at 165; and Joe Arnone posted a 4-2
triumph over Tim Pentz. Also for King's,
Mitch Marcks won on a stalling disqualification
over Jacob Clackett, while Jared Potsko picked up a forfeit.
Against Western Maryland, the Monarchs fell behind
16-6 before rallying to
win
four of the last five bouts to pull out the victory.
In the opening match at 184, Western Maryland
started out quickly as Levi
McVey
pinned Jason Schlingman in 5:47 to put the Green Terror on top 6-0.
At 197, Chris McNally posted a 12-3
major decision over Tegan McKee to give Western
Maryland a 10-0 advantage. The Green Terror then went up 13-0 when
Drew Reinecker gained a 4-2 win over Potsko at
285.
King's cut the lead to 13-6 when
Marcks picked up a forfeit at 125. At 133, Western Maryland's Dan
Patterson used a double-overtime escape
to gain a 11-10 victory over Mike Griffith
to push the Green Terror lead to 16-6. From
there, the Monarchs responded to win four straight bouts.
At 141, Tim Martinez
posted a 11-2 major decision over Harry Kettner to bring King's to
within 16-10. At 149, Morgan pinned Mike
Macey in 5:59 to knot the team score
at 16-16.
The 157-pound matchup featured King's standout Dave
Shafer and Western Maryland's
Rob Johns, the defending Centennial Conference champion who was
ranked fifth nationally. Shafer improved
his season mark to 31-1 when he pinned
Johns in 2:13 to give King's a 22-16 lead.
Jesse Martinez then decisioned
Bill Bobbitt 3-0 to seal the victory by upping the Monarch advantage
to 25-16 heading into the final bout. There, Western Maryland's
Andy Chencharik gained a 6-4 decision
over Arnone to close out the meet.
The Monarchs handed Western Maryland just its second
loss of the season as the
Green Terror ended its dual meet season at 17-2.
The Monarchs will return to action Friday and
Saturday with the Middle Atlantic
Conference Championships at Messiah College.
King's and the University
of Scranton will then co-host the 2002 NCAA Division III National
Championships March 1-2 at First Union
Arena at Casey Plaza.
