MONARCH WRESTLERS PIN HUNTER 44-8, IMPROVE TO 18-2, SCHLINGMAN EARNS 99TH WIN

WILKES-BARRE  -- The fourth ranked King's College wrestling team took another step closer to the school victory record as the Monarchs used five pins to post a 44-9 triumph over visiting Hunter College Wednesday in Scandlon Gymnasium
   
In the opening match at 133, Hunter's Mario Villa used a first period takedown, two escapes and a riding time points to post a 5-2 victory over Mike Griffith.  At 141, King's freshman Tim Martinez (14-11) used a second period reversal, a stalling point and three back points to take a 6-0 lead into the final period. Martinez added a takedown before earning a pin in 6:46 over Joe Pedagno.
   
At 149, King's sophomore Jim Morgan (19-3) used four takedowns and six nearfall points to build a 14-4 first period lead over Elio DiTrento enroute to a 21-5 technical fall triumph.  Monarch junior Dave Shafer (25-1) then built a 4-1 lead before pinning Joe Amalfitano in 2:15 at 157-pounds to give King's a 19-3 lead.
   
Monarch senior Jesse Martinez (19-8) used a takedown and two sets of back points to build a 8-0 lead before pinning Robert Duchonovic at 165 in 1:25.   At 174,  King's freshman Joe Arnone ( 22-6) led 8-0 before pinning Josh Daymean in 1:25.
   
At 184, Monarch senior all-American Jason Schlingman (26-5) posted the team's fourth consecutive fall when he built a 7-1 first period lead before pinning Roger Sarrabo in 3:46. With the win, Schlingman improved to 99-21 for his career and is within one win of becoming the third Monarch grappler to reach 100 victories.

King's 197-pound freshman Tegan McKee (23-7) used two takedowns to build a 4-1 first period lead over Ed Parra. McKee then added two second period takedowns to extend the advantage to 8-4 entering the final period.  McKee posted another takedown and added a riding time point to earn an 11-5 decision and give the Monarchs a 38-3 advantage.

   
At 285, Hunterıs Mike Roman took a 2-0 lead on a first period takedown but Kingıs Jared Potsko reversed to send the bout into the second period tied at 2-2. Romano then gained a reversal to take a 4-2 lead heading into the final frame before gaining a pin at 4:15 and cutting the Monarchs advantage to 38-9. Mitch Marcks (26-2) then picked up a forfeit at 125 to bring the final score to 44-9.
   
King's improved to 18-2 on the year and is on the verge of surpassing the school record of 19 victories set in 1997 and equaled last season. The Monarchs will have that opportunity Saturday when the Monarchs travel to New York City for a quadrangular match with host New York University, Elizabethtown College, and New York Maritime.
