MONARCH WRESTLERS HAND MUHLENBERG 42-3 SETBACK

WILKES-BARRE  --     The King's College wrestling team won nine of 10 bouts to post a 42-3 victory over visiting Muhlenberg College Thursday in Scandlon Gymnasium.
   
With the win, King's, ranked fourth nationally in NCAA Division III, improved to 17-2, while Muhlenberg fell to 13-6.
   
In the first match at 285-pounds, King's Jared Potsko broke a 1-1 third period tie with a takedown with 0:30 remaining to defeat Josh Carter.

At 125, King's seventh-ranked sophomore Mitch Marcks (25-2) gave the Monarchs a 9-0 lead with a pin in 1:00 over Jed Wulfekotte.  In the next match, Monarch sophomore Mike Griffith used a first period takedown, then added a reversal and nearfall points to take a 6-5 lead over Jeremy Hart heading into the third period at 133-pounds.  Griffith then used a takedown and two sets of back points in the final frame to earn a 14-6 major decision.   
   
At 141, Muhlenberg's Nate Yeasted used first and second period takedowns to build a 4-1 lead. But Monarch freshman Tim Martinez used a cradle for a three-point nearfall, then earned a riding time point to win a 5-4 decision over Yeasted, a returning Centennial Conference champion and national qualifier to put the Monarchs ahead 16-0.
   
In the feature match of the evening at 149-pounds, returning national qualifiers Jim Morgan of King's and Muhlenberg's Nate Holsinger traded first period takedowns and escapes to enter the second stanza tied at 3-3.  Holsinger, ranked eighth nationally, escaped to take a 4-3 lead but Morgan, ranked seventh, countered with a takedown to pull ahead 5-4. Holsinger again escaped to tied the bout at 5-5 heading into the last period. From there, Morgan, ranked seventh nationally, would escape and score a takedown with 0:31 left  to capture a 8-5 decision and hand Holsinger (20-1) his first loss of the season while improving his own mark to 18-3 on the year.
   
At 157, King's Dave Shafer scored a first period takedown then headlocked Joe Salerno into a pin at 3:47 as the King's junior improved to 24-1.  In the next bout Monarch senior Jesse Martinez (18-8) pinned Shawn Zeplin in 1:26 to give the Monarchs a 31-0 lead after the 165-pound class.
   
At 174, Muhlenberg got on the board when Andy Faust (12-2) scored an escape in the second overtime frame to gain a 2-1 decision over Joe Arnone(21-6) and cut the Kingšs lead to 31-3.
   
Kingšs senior all-American Jason Schlingman (25-5) used four first period takedowns to build a 8-3 lead at 184-pounds. He added an escape and five second period takedowns to take a 17-6 lead heading into the final period. Schlingman then registered four more takedown in the final period to post a 25-10 technical fall over Bill Cummins.  At 197, Monarch freshman Tegan McKee led 2-1 before taking Jason Slokovitz to his back and securing the fall at 1:36 and improving to 22-7.
   
King's will return to the mats Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. when the Monarchs host Hunter College in Scandlon Gymnasium.
