KING'S WRESTLERS LIVE UP TO NATIONAL RANKING
(11TH ranked Monarchs post first-ever win over Lycoming, defeat 22nd
ranked Ithaca, Albright)
READING - The King's College wrestling team enjoyed a stellar
day by sweeping a quadrangular meet Saturday at Albright College in
Reading.
King's, ranked 11th nationally in Division III, posted its first-ever win
against 12th ranked Lycoming with a 24-9 triumph. The Monarchs the
earned another impressive with a 27-9 verdict over 22nd ranked Ithaca.
King's then closed out the day with 40-6 victory over Albright.
King's improved to 6-0 on the year.
Against Lycoming, the Monarchs won seven of 10 bouts, including five of
the first six. Freshman Tim Martinez got King's off on the right
track with a 10-7 decision at 141. Sophomore Jim Morgan, a 2001 MAC
champion, put Kingšs ahead 6-0 with a 2-1 decision at 149. Monarch
standout Dave Shafer put King's up 9-0 with a 12-5 decision at 157.
Lycoming picked up its first win at 165 as Derek Crane earned a 4-2
overtime win over Jesse Martinez, but the Monarchs countered with a big
overtime win of their own as freshman Joe Arnone earned a 2-1 upset of
defending MAC champion Andy Hull, the seventh ranked wrestler in Division
III, to put the Monarchs on top 12-3.
At 184, King's all-American Jason Schlingman extended the lead to 15-3
with a 15-8 decision. Lycoming then earned a decision when
John Neve, the 2001 MAC champion at heavyweight, posted a 3-1 decision at
197-pounds over Monarch rookie Tegan McKee. At 285-pounds, King's
sophomore Jared Potsko gave the Monarchs a 18-6 lead, clinching the match
with a 5-4 decision, before teammate Mitch Marcks was awarded a forfeit at
125 to push the advantage to 24-6. In the final bout, Lycoming's
Mike Waldron, ranked eighth nationally in Division III, gained a 7-4
decision over Mike Griffith.
Against Ithaca, King's won five of the first seven matches to build a 18-6
lead. Morgan earned a 10-4 decision at 149 before Shafer posted a
16-0 technical fall at 157. Arnone and Schlingman both earned
decisions before McKee gained a major decision to put the Monarchs firmly
in control. King's closed out the match with a pair of wins as Marcks
gained a 5-4 decision over Carlos Restrepo, the third ranked wrestler in
Division III, before Griffith pinned Bryan Gammons in 1:33 in the final
bout.
The Monarchs showed their depth against Albright as coach Ned McGinley
used only three starters in a 40-6 victory. Jim Lewis, Derek Elliot, and
Mitch Marcks earned pins, while Tom Derhammer posted a major decision.
Joe DeVitis and Glen Zimmerman added decisions for the Monarchs.
