KING'S WINS FINAL TWO BOUTS TO TOP WILKES

WILKES-BARRE -- King's College won the final two bouts of the evening to break open a tied match and post a 23-13 win over Wilkes University in a Middle Atlantic Conference wrestling match in the Marts Center on Wednesday night. 

The win improves the Monarchs, ranked 11th in the latest Brute/Adidas Division III poll, to 3-0 overall. Wilkes suffers their first loss in five matches.

With the match tied at 13-13 with two bouts left, the Monarchs got a major decision at 149 pounds when Jim Morgan topped Wilkes' Jed Starner, 20-7 to give the Monarchs a 17-13 advantage. In the final match of the night, Dave Shafer, ranked eighth in Division III at 157 pounds, pinned the Colonels' Scott Henshaw in 4:06 to close out the contest.

King's took a 3-0 lead after Jesse Martinez earned a 4-1 win over Andrew Helms at 165 pounds. Wilkes would tie the score at 3-3 as Rex Harris scored an 8-6 decision over Joe Arnone at 174 pounds.

The Monarchs won back to back matches to take a 10-3 lead. At 184 pounds, Jason Schlingman, ranked fifth in Division III, posted a 12-7 win over Jon Neyerlin. Tegan McKee then scored a major decision for King's at 197 pounds with a 13-5 win over Cory Walker.

At 285 pounds, Cory Fleisher from Wilkes shutout his counterpart from King's, Jared Potsko, 6-0, to cut the lead to 10-6. But, the Monarchs went back on top 13-6, when Mitchell Marcks scored a 3-1 win by decision over Kevin Shannon at 125-pounds.

Wilkes would rally to tie the score with a pair of wins. At 133 pounds John Muscarella from Wilkes fashioned an 18-5 win by major decision over Mike Griffith to close the gap to 13-10. Then, at 141 pounds, Wilkes' Jason Hills notched a 5-1 win by decision over Tim Martinez to tie team score 13-13 and set the stage for the Monarchs late heroics.
