KING’S GRAPPLERS FALL TO DIVISION II KUTZTOWN 35-12

WILKES-BARRE – NCAA Division II Kutztown University won eight of 1o matches, registering three pins and a major decision as the Golden Bears posted a 35-12 victory over host King’s College Monday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, Kutztown improved to 4-0 in dual meets while the Monarchs fell to 4-7.

In the first match at 125-pounds Rich Dorsey scored the first point of the match with a second period escape of Ed Harris with 0:57 left in the second period. Harris would add a quick escape to tie the bout at 1-1 in the third period. Neither wrestler would score again over the final frame to send the match into overtime. After a scoreless first session, Harris would escape in the second extra period for a 2-1 lead. Dorsey would then post a reversal early in the third overtime period to take a 3-2 advantage, but Harris scored an escape to tie the match at 3-3. In the fourth overtime period, Dorsey would take Harris down to his back to record a sudden pin with 0:32 remaining in the period to give the Monarchs a 6-0 lead.

At 133-pounds, King’s defending NCAA Division III national champion David Morgan would miss the match with an illness and Kutztown took advantage when Robert Vollrath pinned Monarch backup 125-pounder Lenny Viggiano in 1:12 to even the team score at 6-6.

In the next match at 141-pounds Kutztown’s Ben Soupik took a 2-0 lead over Tony Miele after the Monarch sophomore was penalized twice for in the opening period. Miele would escape to start the second period to cut the lead to 2-1 but Soupik answered in the third period with an escape of his own with 1:19 remaining for a 3-1 lead. Miele picked up a late stalling penalty point but Soupik would gain the 3-2 victory.

At 149, Chris Chambers of Kutztown would take a 2-0 led when he took down King’s Frankie Davis with just 0:02 left in the first period. Chambers would escape to start the second for a 3-0 lead, but Davis answered with a third period escape to cut the lead to 3-1. Chambers added a riding time point to register the 4-1 decision and increase the Kutztown lead to 12-6.

In the 157-pound bout, King’s Taylor Green would take a 1-0 lead over David Zeek with a second period escape. Zeek, however, wound counter with a takedown and three near fall points to build a 5-1 lead entering the third period. Green would score a takedown with 0:29 left to cut the lead to 5-3 but Zeek was awarded a penalty point a 6-3 decision and a 15-6 lead in the team scoring.

At 165, Kutztown’s Sonny Flood took a 4-0 first period lead over Ryan Trees with a takedown and two near fall points. Flood would secure a second period escape before registering a fall at 5:23 to up the Kutztown lead to 21-6 and provide the Golden Bears with their fifth straight win of the evening.

In the 174-pound match, King’s Mike Reilly used three takedowns, two near fall points and a penalty points to build a 9-3 first period lead over Andrew Osborne. In the second period Reilly would then end the match with a pin in 3:59 to cut the Golden Bear advantage to 21-12.

At 184, Kutztown’s Kyle Davis took a 1-0 lead over Zach Martinez with a second period escape, then stretched the score to 6-0 with a second period reversal and two near fall points before recording a fall in 4:28 to clinch the match for the Golden Bears as the team score grew to 27-12.

In the 197-pound matchup, Scott Snyder of Kutztown two takedowns and two near fall points to build a 6-0 lead over Jonathan Wood heading into the second period. Snyder would post a second period takedown, and then followed up with a third period escape for a 9-3 advantage. He would tack on a takedown and riding time point to garner a 12-3 major decision while pushing the team score to 31-12.

In the final match at 285, Kevin Bolinsky of Kutztown scored a first period takedown of John Humble, and then added a second period escape and takedown to enter the final 2:00 with a 5-0 lead. Bolinsky would tally a takedown with 0:29 left and a riding time point for an 8-0 major decision, giving the Golden Bears a 35-12 triumph.
