KING'S TENNIS LOOKING FOR GOLD IN MAC INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

WILKES-BARRE -- Three members of the King's College men's tennis team have advanced to the semi-final round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships being held at Kirby Park and the Ralston Complex in Edwardsville.  Additionally, two of the Monarchs three doubles teams have advanced to the semi-finals.

Two-time defending champion Mike Portonova received a first-round bye to advance to the second finals of the number-one flight, following a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Jon Skoner of Juniata. Portonova will now face third-seeded Ian Box of Moravian in the semi-finals.

At number-five singles, third-seeded sophomore David Boe reached the semi-finals with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) over Aaron Rhodes of Juniata. He will face second-seeded Jared Ziegler of Lebanon Valley in the semi-finals

At sixth singles, second-seeded David Kaluzavich reached the semi-finals with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sid Dunn of FDU-Florham. He will face third-seeded William Tanis of Messiah in the semi-finals

In the number-two flight, third-seeded Nick Hojsack was ousted with a 6-3, 6-1 verdict to Vikram Rao of Drew. At third singles, King's Blake Bonser dropped a three-setter to Matt Grodzinski of Lebanon Valley.  At number-four singles, senior Matt Dunn fell to Scranton's Steve Russo 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, third-seeded defending champions Portonova and Hojsack reached the semi-finals of the number-one with a 8-5 victory over Kyle Ungavsky and Matt Kenney of Wilkes.

Second-seeded Kaluzavich and Dunne also made it to the semi-finals of the number-three doubles flight with a 8-1 victory over Zach Kaufman and Matt Hotchkiss of Lebanon Valley.

At number-two doubles, Bonser and Boe lost 8-2 to Alex Bruin and John Zalesky of FDU-Florham in the first round.
