KING’S CLAIMS 7-2
MEN’S TENNIS WIN OVER WILKES
(Kingston, PA) – King’s College posted a
7-2 win over visiting Wilkes University in the Freedom Conference
men’s tennis opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon at Kirby
Park. The victory improved the Monarchs to 5-3 overall, while the
Colonels saw their record slip to 1-1.
King’s took a 2-1 lead heading into singles by scoring wins at the
first and third doubles positions. Mike Portonova and Nick Hojsack
teamed up for an 8-2 win over Cory Golden and Matt Kenney at the
first spot. Matt Dunne and David Kaluzavich copped an 8-6 victory
over Tom Miller and Salman Punekar at number three. The Colonels
would avoid the doubles sweep when their second team of Kyle
Ungvarsky and Nick Williams rallied for a 9-8 (7-3) win over Blake
Bonser and David Boe.
Portonova, the two-time defending Middle Atlantic Conference
champion at number-one singles, received a major challenge in his
singles match. Wilkes’ Kyle Ungvarsky took the first set 7-5,
before Portonova rebounded for a 6-1 win in the second. The duo
played a super tie-breaker for the third set and Portonova was able
to survive, 10-7.
Hojsack was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Miller at the second position and
Bonser claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Golden at number-three to
give King’s an insurmountable 5-1 lead.
Wilkes would make it 5-2 thanks to Matt Kenney’s 5-7, 7-5, 7-6
(10-4) win over Dunne at number-four. However, King’s would win the
final two matches to pull away. Boe posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over
