PORTONOVA WINS MAC SINGLES TITLE, ALSO TEAMS WITH HOJSACK FOR DOUBLES
CROWN

BETHLEHEM -- King's College tennis standout Mike Portonova won his
second straight Middle Atlantic Conference singles title, then teamed
with Nick Hojsack to claim the doubles crown as the MAC Championships
concluded Sunday at Lehigh University.
Portonova, a sophomore, reached the finals of the number-one singles
flight with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Jeremy Speicher of Albright. In the
championship match, Portonova dropped his first set to an MAC opponent
in two years, but battled back to post a 6-7, 6-1, 10-8 triumph over
Frank Geiger of FDU-Florham. Portonova went 4-0 in the event to improve
his season mark to 24-1.
Portonova, who won the 2005 MAC singles title with a perfect 24-0
record, is now 48-1 in his two year Monarch career.
In doubles, Portonova and Hojsack, also a sophomore, reached the finals
with an 8-4 victory over John Stanley and Nate Ipsen of Messiah. In the
championship match, the Monarch duo bested brothers Frank and Adam
Geiger of FDU-Florham 8-3. Portonova and Hojsack went 4-0 at the event
to improve their doubles mark to 19-5.
Hojsack also played singles, reaching the semi-finals of the number-two
flight where he fell to top-seeded Nate Ipsen of Messiah, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Blake Bonser concluded an outstanding tournament in the
number-five singles flight, finishing in second place. In the
semi-finals, Bonser defeated Jay Navarro of Juniata 6-2, 6-1. In the
finals, he fell to top-seeded Jason Woods of Drew University 6-1, 6-2.
Bonser concluded his rookie with a fine 18-8 record.
Also for King's, junior Matt Dunne reached the semi-final round where he
fell to Zach Kauffman of Lebanon Valley 6-2, 6-2.
