KING'S TENNIS HAS FOUR SINGLES PLAYERS, ONE DOUBLES TEAM ALIVE AT MAC
CHAMPIONSHIPS
BETHLEHEM -- After the first day of competition, the King's College
men's tennis team has four singles players and one doubles squad still
alive at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships at Lehigh
University.
Sophomore Mike Portonova, the defending champion and top seed at the
number-one singles flight, advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of
Susquehanna's Steve Kane. Fourth-seeded Nick Hojsack also advanced for
King's with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mike Clark of Scranton in the
number-two singles flight.
Portonova and Hojsack, the top-seed in the number-one doubles flight,
advanced with an 8-1 triumph over Vikram Arora and Dan Kiers of
Scranton.
Portonova is slated to face Albright's Jeremy Speicher Sunday at 11:00
a.m. Hojsack will meet top-seeded Nate Ipsen of Messiah.
In doubles, Portonova and Hojsack will face John Stanley and Ipsen
of Messiah Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
Junior Matt Dunne, unseeded in the number-three singles flight remained
alive with a pair of victories. In his opening match, Dunne bested
Paurush Shah of Scranton by a 7-6, 6-4 count, then upset fourth-seeded
Arady Smolansky of FDU-Florham in 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 marathon. Dunne
will next face Zach Kauffman of Lebanon Valley on Sunday.
Freshman Blake Bonser also advanced in the number-five singles flight
with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over John Scarangello of Lycoming.
Senior Brett Shipe dropped his first match at number-four singles,
falling by a 6-4, 7-6 decision to John Strutzman of Lycoming.
Sophomore Davis Boe also fell in the opening round with a 6-1, 6-0 loss
to third-seeded Mike Kennedy of Drew.
The tournament will conclude Sunday with play beginning at 10:00 a.m.
