TWO SINGLES PLAYERS, TWO
DOUBLES TEAM ALIVE FOR MONARCHS AT MAC TOURNEY
BETHLEHEM -- After the first
day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championships, King's
College had two singles players and two doubles teams still alive
championship gold.
In singles, freshman Mike Portonova, the top seed in the number-one
flight, received a first-round bye before posting an 8-1 decision over
Jon Stanley of Messiah.
In the number-five singles flight, senior Eric Mazza remained alive
after an 8-4 win over Juniata's Tom Nelson.
Monarch rookie Nick Hojsack dropped an opening round 8-5 verdict in the
number-two singles flight to Scranton's Chris Yi.
In the number-three singles flight, sophomore Matt Dunne posted an 8-5
victory over Anthony May of DeSales, before falling 8-2 to Wilkes' Arvin
Narula.
Junior Brett Shipe would
register an 8-5 win over Moravian's Sean Lynch in the number-four
singles flight, but was then eliminated by fourth-seeded Jon Wentling of
Messiah.
At number-sixth singles, King's freshman David Boe dropped an opening
round 8-4 decision to Sean Weir of Lebanon Valley.
In doubles, the top-seeded team of Portonova and Hojsack received a bye
into the first round of the number-one flight.
Shipe and Boe fell 8-5 to Scranton's Mike Clark and Dan Kiers in the
number-two flight.
In the third flight, Dunne and Mazza moved to the second round with an
8-5 victory over John Henry and Philip Rhodes of Lebanon Valley
