BOB ZIADIEWILKES MEN'S TENNIS DOWNS KING'S, PORTONOVA DOWNS SHAH IN BATTLE OF UNBEATENS
WILKES-BARRE -- The Wilkes University men's tennis team won four-of-six singles match to secure a 5-2 victory over King's College in a Freedom Conference matchup Wednesday at Kirby Park.
With the win, Wilkes improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the Freedom Conference while King's fell to 3-7 and 0-3.In the feature match of the day at singles, King's freshman standout Mike Portonova improved to 10-0 on the year by posting a hard-fought 7-5, 6-1 victory over previously undefeated Wilkes' star Hassan Shah (7-1), the 2003 Middle Atlantic Conference singles champion.
The Colonels countered by winning four of the five remaining singles bouts to clinch the win. Madhan Srinivasan posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Nick Hojsack 6-1, 6-4, while Arvin Narula defeated King's Matt Dunne 6-4, 6-1. Wilkes also received singles victories from John Lowe, who defeated Eric Mazza 7-5, 6-1, while Josh Gardner dropped the first set but came back to earn a 6-7, 6-0, 7-5 victory over David Boe.
King's second singles win came from Brett Shipe who posted a 6-4, 6-0 verdict over Ben Holwitt.The match began with doubles where the Colonels took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three pairings.
Shah and Arvin would defeat Shipe and Mazza 8-2, while Holwitt and Gardner fashioned a 8-4 decision over the Monarch tandem of Dunne and Dennis Maldonado. Portonova and Hojsack would team up to earn a 8-4 win over Srinivasan and Lowe.
King's returns to action Friday with a 3:30 p.m. match with Elizabethtown College at Kirby Park.
