KING'S MEN'S TENNIS PERFORMS WELL AT ITA'S
(Kaluzavich Wins Division in Singles)
FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The King's men's tennis team embarked on a top
pre-season tournament at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Southeast Championships September 30 at Mary Washington University and
came away with its best showing ever according to head coach Bill
Eydler.
The Monarchs walked away with one individual champion, two singles
semi-finalists and one singles quarterfinalist. King's also had two
doubles teams reach the quarterfinals.
Winning
the B-6 Division title for King's was David Kaluzavich (left) who
won four matches. He bested Tom Popomaronis of Virginia Wesleyan 6-2,
3-6, 11-9, then downed Brett Joseph of Franklin and Marshall 7-5, 6-3.
In the semi-finals he defeated Tim Parks of Washington College 6-3, 6-0
and won the title with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Derek Wise of Washington
College.
Nick Hojsack was a semi-finalist at the B-3
Division, posting a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Zach Pack OF
Hampden-Sydney in his first match. Hojsack then defeated Chris Radkeby
of Bridgewater injury default before falling to eventual champion Sasha
Felikson of Salisbury 6-0, 6-3 in the semi-finals.
Blake Bonser also reached the semi-finals of the B-5 Division for
the Monarchs, posting 7-6, 6-3 win over Devon Crosby of Virginia
Wesleyan in his first match. Bonser then downed Brad DeWitt of
Bridgewater 6-3, 6-3 before losing a 6-1, 6-1 verdict to Mark Mentzer of
Grove City in the semi-finals.
David Boe reached the quarterfinals of the B-5 Division for
King's, registering a 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 triumph over Mike Arrighi of
Scranton in his first match. Boe then fell to Jon Keller Washington
College 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
In B-4 singles, Jon Hand dropped his first-round match 6-3, 6-4
to eventual champion Jason Williams of Salisbury, but battled back to
reach the finals of the consolation round. Hand defeated Mark Allinson
of Villa Julie 6-3, 6-3, then posted a 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 consolation
semi-final win over Phil Snyder of Alvernia. Hand was slated to play
Matt Taylor of St. Mary's in the consolation final on Monday but the
match was never played as both teams from King's and St. Mary's had to
return home for Monday classes.
In doubles, Hojsck and Boe teamed up in the B-2 Doubles
Division to post an 8-3 victory over Viani Kamlev and Ken Nugent of St.
Mary's. The Monarch duo then fell to Zach Lockwood and Phil Snyder of
Alvernia 8-4.
Also in B-3 Doubles, Bonser and Hand advanced to the
quarterfinals, downing Alexander Djinin and Andrew MacLaughlin of St.
Mary's 8-3, before losing a tight 9-7 match to Jason Dunn and Zach
McGonigal of Mary Washington.
