FREDERICKSBURG, VA -- The King's men's tennis team embarked on a top pre-season tournament at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Championships September 30 at Mary Washington University and came away with its best showing ever according to head coach Bill Eydler.

The Monarchs walked away with one individual champion, two singles semi-finalists and one singles quarterfinalist. King's also had two doubles teams reach the quarterfinals.

Winning the B-6 Division title for King's was David Kaluzavich (left) who won four matches. He bested Tom Popomaronis of Virginia Wesleyan 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, then downed Brett Joseph of Franklin and Marshall 7-5, 6-3. In the semi-finals he defeated Tim Parks of Washington College 6-3, 6-0 and won the title with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Derek Wise of Washington College.

Nick Hojsack was a semi-finalist at the B-3 Division, posting a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 victory over Zach Pack OF Hampden-Sydney in his first match. Hojsack then defeated Chris Radkeby of Bridgewater injury default before falling to eventual champion Sasha Felikson of Salisbury 6-0, 6-3 in the semi-finals.

Blake Bonser also reached the semi-finals of the B-5 Division for the Monarchs, posting 7-6, 6-3 win over Devon Crosby of Virginia Wesleyan in his first match. Bonser then downed Brad DeWitt of Bridgewater 6-3, 6-3 before losing a 6-1, 6-1 verdict to Mark Mentzer of Grove City in the semi-finals.

David Boe reached the quarterfinals of the B-5 Division for King's, registering a 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 triumph over Mike Arrighi of Scranton in his first match. Boe then fell to Jon Keller Washington College 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

In B-4 singles, Jon Hand dropped his first-round match 6-3, 6-4 to eventual champion Jason Williams of Salisbury, but battled back to reach the finals of the consolation round. Hand defeated Mark Allinson of Villa Julie 6-3, 6-3, then posted a 7-6, 3-6, 10-6 consolation semi-final win over Phil Snyder of Alvernia. Hand was slated to play Matt Taylor of St. Mary's in the consolation final on Monday but the match was never played as both teams from King's and St. Mary's had to return home for Monday classes.

In doubles, Hojsck and Boe teamed up in the B-2 Doubles Division to post an 8-3 victory over Viani Kamlev and Ken Nugent of St. Mary's. The Monarch duo then fell to Zach Lockwood and Phil Snyder of Alvernia 8-4.

Also in B-3 Doubles, Bonser and Hand advanced to the quarterfinals, downing Alexander Djinin and Andrew MacLaughlin of St. Mary's 8-3, before losing a tight 9-7 match to Jason Dunn and Zach McGonigal of Mary Washington.
