2008 MEN'S TENNIS SEASON PREVIEW
The 2008 King's College men's tennis team enters the season with
cautious optimism.
The Monarchs return nine players, including three starters from last
season's team that went 15-6 and placed second in the conference
tournament.
However, the team did suffer a major loss in five-time-time Middle
Atlantic Conference champion Mike Portonova who graduated early from
King's in three years to purse an advanced degree in the medical field.
After compiling a 71-2 record with three MAC singles titles, along with
a 53-12 mark and two MAC doubles championships, Portonova will be
difficult to replace. In turn, the remaining players will have to move
up a slot in the line-up.
Leading
the list of returning players is senior Nick Hojsack (left) who will
play number-one singles. A talented player in his own right, Hojsack was
15-6 at number-two singles a year ago and was a two-time MAC doubles
champion with Portonova, posting a 17-3 mark. He is a two-time
all-conference selection who has gone 36-30 in singles and 57-13 in
doubles during his Monarch career.
Junior
Blake Bonser played number-three singles last season and was 12-10.
Senior David Boe played number-five singles last year and was 13-9. Boe
and Bonser teamed up in doubles, posting a 5-11 record in the second
spot. Junior David Kaluzavich (right) enjoyed a fine 2007 season,
registering a 16-6 mark at sixth singles while sporting a 13-5 doubles
record.
Junior Povl Schmidt was 3-2 a year ago in singles while going 3-1 in
doubles. Senior Adam Pascoe was 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles.
Returning sophomores Jon Ferrie, David Chen, and Joe Guza hope to figure
into the mix as well.
Among
the newcomers, first-year sophomore Johnathan Hand (left) is expected to
challenge for one of the top two singles spots. Fellow sophomore
newcomer Ron Argus will also look to earn court time. Freshmen
Lance Elliott, Paul Herr, Marco Stallone, and Ed Zema round out the
roster.
