KING'S MEN'S SOCCER TEAM CLINCHES THIRD SEED IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS WITH 2-1 WIN AT FDU

MADISON, NJ  -- The King's College men's soccer team clinched its first Freedom Conference playoff berth since 2001 as the Monarchs posted a 2-1 victory over host FDU-Florham Sunday in Madison, NJ.

With the win, King's concluded the regular-season with an 8-8-2 overall record and a 4-2 conference mark while earning the third seed for this week's Freedom Conference Tournament. FDU, meanwhile, fell to 8-7-3 and 2-2-2.

The Devils took a 1-0 lead when Jonathan Jerome scored off an assist from Kyle Meacham 13:40 into the game. King's knotted the score at 1-1 just 6:33 later when Dan Horn struck net with an unassisted goal.

The Monarchs would take a 2-1 lead for good with 3:57 left in the first half when Ryan Murphy (above) scored unassisted.

In the second half, King's defense took over the game as the Monarchs did not allow an FDU shot over the final 45:00 of the game.

King's outshot FDU 12-7 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Under the direction of second-year head coach Mark Bassett, the Monarchs overcame a poor 0-4 start, but rebounded to finish the year strong by going 8-4-2.

The Monarchs will open Freedom Conference play on Wednesday when King's travel to face cross-town rival Wilkes University at a time to be announced at Ralston Field. The teams met on October 16 with the Colonels capturing a 2-1 victory.
